In IE8, when I go down a couple of levels and right-click to Sort by Name, the Favorites do get sorted, but then everything disappears (I can verify they were sorted when I go back).

This is in contrast to: Start \ Programs \ Sort by Name in a Programs folder. These items also get sorted, but the levels remain open. This is how I think it should work.

How can I get Sort by Name to work in Favorites, the way it does in Programs?

I came across a page that said XP handles Favorites differently than Progams.

This would seem to explain it. I wonder if it could be tweaked?

    *************************

    To make IE8 go fast:

Tools \ Internet Options \ Advanced \ Reset . . . go through the wizard, and deselect everything, unless it's for improved security

Tools \ Internet Options \ Programs \ Manage add-ons . . . look through everything there, and Disable all . . . I only have three things Enabled: AVG Safe Search, and two extensions that help Print to pdf

Excel works better to keep track of Favorites

I figured out how to collect my Favorites in IE8, then once a week (calendar software reminds, Calendarscope), file them in an Excel spreadsheet. I have had no regrets. This makes finding things much easier (Ctrl+F, Search By Columns). Specifically:

    *******************************

Convert Favorites to Txt file; View Internet Explorer Favorites information in a readable form.
    http://windowsxp.mvps.org/ie/fav2txt.htm
Edit so you have just the Favorites you want to keep, then

    Paste these Favorites into Word
Edit \ Replace \ More \ Special \ Paragraph Mark (^p) with nothing \ Replace All \ Ok \ Close
Copy and Paste this text back into Notepad (strips hidden characters)
Copy and Paste this text into the bottom of your Favorites Excel spreadsheet

    Spreadsheet is setup like this
    1 - A number - 300, 400, 500 ... 900 - like the Dewey decimal system
    2 - Main Group - Computer Software
    3 - Sub-Group - Browser
    4 - Sub-Group - Favorites to Text
    5 - Sub-Group - extra category
AA - I setup a Custom List so I can Auto Fill, and sort by letter: AA, AB, AC ... ZP ... numbers fail, like 1, 10, 100, 2, 20
x - I mark URLs with an x here, so that they show up at the bottom of the list after I sort (URLs to follow up on)
Desc - Name of the page
    URL - URL
    Date - Date entered
Sort - Use this to sort on an unlimited number of fields (or more than the 3 you get with the button)
    =CONCATENATE(G2, "... ",A2, "... ",B2, "... ",C2, "... ",D2, "... ",E2, "... ",F2, "... ",H2)
Solid Line with a 0 in it, background and 0 are the same color, helps to see end of the data, acts like a boundary

Use this program to speed up editing:
    Auto Hotkey
    http://www.autohotkey.com/
    F5 F6 F7 F8 = All Copy Cut Paste
I just use Cut and Paste, to put the URL in the URL column

In the spreadsheet, add the date, copy down the sort formula, put an x on the ones you want to follow up on, categorize them (copy and paste from above where possible).

Highlight the new Favorites in yellow, so after you sort, you can scan through and see that they're in the right place.

Delete the Favorites in IE (another reason to keep Favorites in Excel is that a lot of Favorites in IE slows down browsing. I currently have 4,287.)

    Frequently used keys to navigate:
    Ctrl+Home
Ctrl+End (go to A1 and save, if it's not going to bottom right of all the data)
    Home
Ctrl+Up Arrow \ Down Arrow \ Left \ Right (goes to occurrence of text)
