Some sites I have to allow cookies in order to use the site but then I delete them in c:\Documents and Settings\(user)\Cookies. I also delete flash cookies from the Adobe Flash (Website Storage Settings) page (does this help?).

However, the next time I go to the site, there is never a pop up asking me to accept cookies. I don't understand how I get thru to the site a second time w/o a cookie check?

Is there somewhere else I have to delete them from?

You should NOT get an alert if a site sets a cookie.
    Cookies are harmless anyway.

If you don't want "tracking cookies" and use Internet Explorer, go to:
Tools menu > Internet Options > Privacy > Advanced button > checkmark Override automatic cookie handling > checkmark Block 3rd party cookies > OK button > OK button.

    TonyT,

    thanks for the reply.

The only question is if I have deleted the cookie on a site after the first visit why is it the next time I visit it, it does Not ask to allow the cookie again just like it did the first time, ie I somehow get thru unchallenged even tho I always block 3rd party cookies.

    Steve,

I regularly check my cookies (I have less than 100) and there are no duplicates of the site in question. Are there any other possibilities?

The site could be using session cookies. Permission is usually not required for session cookies. They only work for the current session (until browser window is closed). When you leave the site the server script "deletes the cookie ". It actually does not delete it, it just changes the cookie time expired value to a date in the past. The cookie will remain on your comp but its data can no longer be used by the site that set it.

In Firefox, cookies can be manually deleted while the browser is opened to the site that set the cookie, but afaik, in IE, if the cookie is in use by the browser, it won't be deleted if it's still in use.

    TonyT,

I don't think that is the problem:

    My settings for IE8 are:

Override auto cookie handling = checked
    First pary cookies = Prompt
    Third party cookies = Block
Always allow session cookies = BLANK (I was told never to check this).

The question still remains, since I delete the specific cookie after exiting the site, how the @#$% do I get back in the next time without a pop up box that I have to allow?

Does the site in question have a support section or a contact us link?

    Steve,

    the site opening page includes:

"Please email support@xxxx.com if you are having problems with the site.
    Cookies must be enabled "

But then the actual cookie says:

bob@xxxx[2].txt but there is no cookie with a [1].

So how can there be a [2] if there is no other cookie or any other similar listing?

    Either it's invisible or .........

    thanks

    I found the problem.

Not only do you have to delete the cookie but in my case, you also have go into

IE > Tools > Internet Options > Privacy > Sites and delete the specific line for the site that says "Always Allow ".

So it's a 2 step process to kill a cookie after you have accepted it.
