When I use the Compaq diagnostics it will find the cdrom in the drive at the time and even find it again after a reboot. It will not however recognize a different cd placed in the drive.

The drive is a Liteon LTN-301 and I have searched for drivers and firmware. I did find a driver but that didn't work. I have removed the cdrom and the system (win98) upon reboot rebuilds the driver database, adds the cdrom with no ability to use the drive.

Any suggestions beyond replacement? thanks in advance!

Have you tried a different IDE Cable. Also try hooking up the drive to a different computer, if it still does it, it is probobly the drive.

    bad drive

I pretty much surmised it was the drive. used diagnostics and the cd in during the test would work and after that...nothing. for the amount of time I spent I could have bought a new one and installed it. so I cut my losses and moved on! thanks again.

    I had a similar problem w/ Liteon

    The cable wasn't installed correctly.
The light would go on and the door would open but no juice, no action.
Make sure you've read the instructions and have the cable connected correctly and the jumpers right.
