We have a FreeAgent GO 5 GB external hard drive that has always worked great. We have used the FreeAgent GO on two different laptops without any problems at all.

A few months ago, we replaced one of our laptops with a desktop. It is an emachines with Windows 7; the sticker on the front says "AMD Athlon II x2" - which is about all I know about it. It seems to work just great.

However, when I plug the Freeagent GO into a USB port (like I always did on the laptops) the emachines computer does not open a Seagate dialog box. It is a "nonevent" - no recognition from the computer at all.

I went online to see what I might be missing... not very much info, but it appeared to be that I need a "docking station" for the Freeagent. The only place it appeared to be available was at Staples. On inquiring at a local Staples store, I found that Staples has discontinued the "docking station. "

A few of my facebook friends say I should not NEED a docking station (much confusion expressed by some of them)... maybe a driver?

I have not looked further for this "docking station" - however, I would like to access this external hard drive from my emachines computer.

    Any ideas?

Perhaps there is a driver download?

Thank you, in advance, for whatever info you might be able to share.

This drive is for external use, the box it is in is the docking station.

The unit should be detected by the PC, it sounds as if that is not happening.

Please give the full name and model number of the drive so I can get some more information from Seagate Support. This drive is likely to be more than 5GB as you have typed and I would have thought it would be plug and play so something is clearly wrong.

    Thank you.

    The information is as follows:

Seagate FreeAgent Go 500 GB PN 9KW2AH-500 SN 2GE1NX8E

I plugged the Seagate unit into the Acer laptop yesterday; the Acer recognized the Seagate, and I was able to open up all the files and folders on the Seagate. The data is intact, as far as I can tell.

I plugged the Seagate into the emachines desktop just now; it hums and lights up, as if it is working fine. The emachines desktop, however, does not "see" the Seagate. When I click on "My Computer" it shows "Devices with Removable Storage (2)" and below that it lists the DVD RW Drive (D:) and a Removable Disk (H:), which is a 1.83 GB photo card.

The "box" is black, if that helps. The cord is white; it has a "mini" end that goes into the Seagate, and a regular USB end that plugs into the computer.

    Very much appreciate your help.

Oh, my. I am so embarrassed!

Just under the "Removable Disk (H:)" listing in the "Computer" menu (to the far left on my screen), there is a separate listing that says "FreeAgent Drive (K:) "... and there it is.

My apologies, and again, you have my gratitude for your patience and help!! I think I can take it from here! There are options to InstallSeagateManager right in this folder. It simply was not in the "other" removable hard disk folder, and I did not look further.

I think I will blame my bifocals for this!

    Separate problem, same Seagate...

I did the install, and it is now telling me that it didn't install correctly, and to try reinstalling with settings that are compatible with this version of Windows.

This desktop is Windows 7. The laptops were XP and Vista. I think this Seagate is for 32-bit XP or Vista...

Is there a download...? Or did it probably install OK? How can I tell?

    Thanks again.... Jeni

Thanks for the link to the Seagate support page. I was able to click around and find what I needed. The installation is complete, but it might have taken me days to get to the right support page without your help.

I think the thing is - I trust WindowsBBS folks and ideas. Without your input I'm reluctant to try to fix things myself. It's wonderful to know I have access to an international team of helpers!!

Now I can see my photos on the "big screen" - and I am ever so grateful that it didn't take a whole weekend of stressing out to get here!

    Thank you ever so much!

Though I managed to solve this (mostly) myself, I found these things very helpful:

    1) The presence of WindowsBBS, and the knowledge that I have friends I can trust here.
    2) The link to the Seagate support page.
    3) The kind and courteous replies to my message.

Because of WindowsBBS and the sense that I can trust the advice here, I had a lot more confidence in researching the support available for this (as it turns out, quite simple) issue.

    Many many thanks, once again.
