    Hello - All,
Just bought a new Dell i-5 with win7-64bit..I expressly made sure with Dell there would be IDE connectors on the mobo, to use my old XP disks.. I don't find any?
I've poked around disk mgmt. nothing there...
Where to look or check...Is it just assumed and not listed?
I'm feeling uncomfortable about this...Did Dell ignore my request? They aren't the company they used to be!!!
I ran belarc advisor nothing listed in controllers!!!
    Thanks for suggestions.
    John in Dallas.

Most all new comps use sata, but many still come with one ide port. What model Dell?

Did you poke around inside the case and look for the connection?

I've not seen a new computer without at least one IDE connection - yet. In fact, many still have a floppy connection. But I agree, we can't help without specific model numbers.

My ASUS board is from October 2008 and does not have an IDE connector nor a floppy connector!

Wow! I am not surprised with the lack of floppy but I am with the IDE. Of course that is not a typical PC motherboard either. And being an ASUS, they are certainly a top tier maker of reliable boards so that explains why none have come across my bench for repair - they rarely break.

    Thanks for opening my eyes.

    Hello-All,
NO-I haven't opened the win7 box...wouldn't know what i "m looking for anyway or recognize it!!!
    My dell is a studio xps8100 intel core i-5 760 processor (8mb cache 2.8ghz..
When I drill down in system info. in storage I find listed drives, disks, scsi , and IDE?? Does that indicate a connection for IDE drives???
If that's true, this would be a better installation routine than the external IDE enclosures???
    Thanks for info
    Thanks / John in Dallas.

That's because IDE and Floppy ports are now illegal in Malta! Move to Sicily where anything goes!

    Hello ~~ All,
I'm considering the SATA TO IDE connector as suggested by Russ..
That seems my only course. As soon as I find someone skilled enough to accomplish the task, I'll post the results.
    Thanks / John in Dallas.

    Hello - All,
Sorry for the late reply or resolved situation....It became such a problem, trying to figure out the best way to use my old xp box just to have access to my ubuntu OS, I finally found virtualbox and it works flawlessly!!
Now, I have the best of both worlds: WIN7 and Linux! And - most importantly - no fear of corrupting either of them.

When or if I need more space , I'll use my old IDE drives in an external enclosure.
System: win7 64bit - 8gigs ram - 1teribite???? sata HD...Don't see me running out of room in this lifetime...Thanks everyone.
