    Using Windows XP, SP3
After computer sits idle for 20 minutes or longer.
I try to open the IE 7 using desk icon, will open window but will never connect, just blank page.
    No error message or anything.
Have to reboot to be able to use IE 7.

Thank you in advance for your kind help

First I would suggest you upgrade to IE8 and see if the problem persists.

Or if you want to stick with the older version delete all your history, passwords, cookies, etc.

    Other things to try ....

Reset IE - Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Reset

Run IE without Add-ons and see if that resolves the issue.

I concur with markmadras - you should upgrade to IE 8 - IE 9 is already out in beta.

Just in case you are tempted to go to IE9, DON'T, it is still in beta and has caused a lot of problems during use and is a major headache to uninstall. IE8, on the other hand, is tried and tested and just by upgrading your problem may disappear.

Let us know how you get on.

Thank you all for your kind advice. I had already made those same moves to no avail but didn't hurt to ask. I don't care for IE8 because you open one browser and it shows two in the task manager and it is a memory hog.

    Thank you again

We can continue to assist if you wish, there are other avenues to explore to cure this problem. You could start by disabling all your add-ons.

But, if you wish to close this thread please mark it as resolved from the 'Thread Tools' tab, just above the top right hand corner of the first post.

IE7 is old and vulnerable, you need IE8!

Memory hog? Who cares about some memory. I'm sure you have enough. I've 3 instances running right now (1 with 10 tabs), using 176,000K (171MB).

Running 1 instance on Windows XP (yes, 2x iexplore.exe) uses a whopping 24.5MB (roughly the same as Outlook Express 6 and a little less than Avast 5).

Read this if you need to be convinced it is time to move on, IE8 is faster and a lot more reliable.
Tests have shown that it uses less memory than IE7 but even if it used more, as Arie has pointed out, you have plenty of it just sitting there with nothing else to do. If you have more than one page open it may use more but you have the advantage of changing pages in an instant:).

Furthermore I can have four or five instances of IE8 running in task manager and still only use about 35% of 4GB of memory. If your system uses a lot more memory than that there will be a reason then we can help you to find.
