When purchasing a CD/DVD RW drive for a laptop is it possible to get a "one fits all" as can be done with hard drives. I realize that the plastic cover on the end of the tray is purpose made to match the edge of the laptop case but can it be removed and put onto a new drive.

I'm presently after a drive for a Packard Bell Easynote Vesuvio A Model VVA00.

A little advise on this would be most appreciated:)

Some laptop CDROM drives are proprietary, in that the plastic side cover is integrated. I have also seen laptop drives like that where the plastic cover is part of an enclosure where any drive can then be replaced.

Remove the drive and see if the CDROM drive is scruud to the emclosure. If so, then any PATA or SATA drive will work. (intententional mispelling because the correct spelling will get replaced with asterisks)

s c r e w e d will get printed, just leave a gap between each letter. How is that an inappropriate word as long as it is used in the correct context.:confused:

Anyway, thank you for the information TonyT that's most usefull to know.

I'll leave this open for a little longer for any further comments to be added. A good mail order company in the UK for laptop CD/DVD drives (who deliver to Europe) would be usefull to hear about.

    Mark,

If you do find the drive is propriertary then it'll probably be easier and cheaper to buy an external USB drive though obviously this will increase the hassle with a portable device.

Just my tuppence worth, and yes swear filters can be a PITA ;)
