    OK, more news:

See the following thread: Firefox Support Forum
    https://support.mozilla.com/sr-LATN/questions/664386#answer-116225

I don't know how long this will hold, but I've been able to make the problem go away (on my Win 7 machine with FF 3.6.10). I didn't realize how much of a relief it would be!

What I did was to get rid of three add-ons I felt I didn't need: Force TLS 2.0, Invisible Hand 2.8, and YouTube to MP3 1.0.7 .

    Still testing, will report back.

    Frank,
I have never tried those addons, nor tried to remove the last tab, or open with no tabs. I would have never known that there was a possible problem, as I use FF.
Now, for the next trick, you should update to 3.6.12, leaving out the addons.

    Westside,

I am now ready for my next trick: I'm going to update/upgrade to FF 3.6.12 and see if my latest attempt at exorcising the Unclosable Tab demon works or if it's still with me.

OK, I've upgraded FF to 3.6.12 and the dreaded Unclosable Tab has not reappeared. :)

    I'll report back.

    GOOD NEWS:
I've been operating all day, with 5-6 reboots of my Win 7 machine and 8-10 restarts of FF 3.6.12, and the "fix" is still working. No Unclosable Tabs today! :)

I also uninstalled the Invisible Hand 2.8 add-on from FF 3.6.12 on my Win XP machine (the only add-on the two machines had in common), and after using FF all day with about 5 reboots and 10 restarts I've had the same good luck. :)

Looks like Invisible Hand may have been the culprit.

I'll keep working and report back.

    Frank

    Good luck Frank,
yesterday, I would have told you that you are in business, but, not today.
I am, in the middle, of a different problem. I have four different versions of Firefox, all opened with different profiles. 3.6.12 is default, when 3.5.16 is there, just in case. They coestisted beautifully, until I installed 4.0 b7, using a different profile, of course. Very soon, when I clicked on a link, in mail, e.g.,it appeared that 4.0 b7 was opening as default. Later, I found out that it was 3.6.12 opening with the 4.0 b7 profile, losing some addons, in the process. When I opened 3.6.12, from its shortcut, I discovered that that profile had lost default, somehow.
I created a new profile for 4.0 b7, and everything seemed fine. Then, I tried to use 4.0 b8, using the same odd profile of b7. It worked great, all day, yesterday. But, this morning 3.6.12, again, opened with the now 4.0 b8 profile, losing, again three addons.
When I went back opening 3.6.12 from its shortcut, it looked normal. I don't know if 3.6.12 is crazy, or what, but I have had a number of same type of programs, just different version, and different profile, on my computer, for years, but this is the first time that I found this oddity.

Westside, it feels strange to hear that I'm not the only one with Firefox problems. I was afraid I was an oddity magnet, but yours is really an oddity. I have no insights other than to say I will never again try beta versions, since I tried FF version 4 beta 1 and realized, after reverting to the previous version, what a narrow escape I had just had. I'll wait until after it's out of beta, and maybe a while longer.

    Good luck!

    Frank

    UPDATE:

Still running Firefox 3.6.12 on both machines with no Unclosable Tab problems, since removal of the Invisible Hand add-on.

    Frank

P.S. I'm going to mark this Resolved. If it comes back, I'll reopen it.
