    hello

    i am running ie5.5,sp2 (recently rolled back from ie6.0, sp1) on win2000pro....

an intermittent problem i am encountering is that various toolbar url links (and also url links in desk top folders), when clicked, will begin to open a new window (that's how i want it, i do not have the "reuse windows for launching shortcuts" option checked in advance settings), but after just a few brief seconds, the new window will disappear, and of course, never open.

as i say, this is intermittent, occurring only about 5% of the time, and usually happens after being online for an extended period of time. closing all browser windows, then reopening them one by one, seems to alleviate this condition.

also, when this begins to happen, i have opened task manager and noticed that there are 2 or 3 IEXPLORE.EXE processes running simultaneously.

i have no idea if this task manager observation is in any way related to the closing browser windows, but felt it worth noting.

btw, i would have tried running the ie repair tool, but i was unable to locate it via the add/remove program feature. i guess ie5.5 doesn't offer the repair tool?

anyone have any suggestions regarding these intermittently closing (instead of opening) browser windows?

    thank you so much

    :)

Try via start, accessories, system tools, system info. When that window opens, select tools, IE repair. Post back good or bad. 5.5 does have the feature.

    hi aleekat

not in this case. there are ten windows tools listed under tools in system info.... none are the ie repair tool. i should have noted when i mentioned the other place that the tool can be found (add/remove programs), that i already i looked under sys info.

    thanks for the input

    hi brett

i followed your link and have read my way through the thread. thank you. :)

still lots of stuff in those responses to digest and to try.

INTERESTINGLY.... one of the links on one of your posts found on page one caused this behavior to replicate for me!

the link in question (lavasoft url) is the 3rd "this" link in your statement:

"Run this, download and run this and this and, finally, visit this page. "

    isn't that coincidental?

i AM running a popup stopper (NoAds) and i did shut it down when experimenting with that link. there was a change. with NoAds running, the new window did its disappearing act. with NoAds closed, the window stayed in place but the page did not load, displaying the "The page cannot be displayed" message.

so i am perhaps getting closer.

i still want to run the ie repair tool from a command prompt, per the mskb article you linked for us. i'll report back any findings there. and as i said, there's more stuff to try.

brett, i think that finding more than 1 (and in some cases, 2-3) IEXPLORE.EXE processes running simultaneously is not normal. can you give me your thoughts on this? i see via task manager that right now, in addition to 2 IEXPLORE.EXE's, there are also 2 svchost.exe processes running. this seems not right to me.

thanks very much, and this is not an emergency... just another one of those when something's not right situations!

    :)

Disable third party browser extensions (Tools - Internet Options - Advanced), reboot and see what happens. If this resolves, re-enable extensions and experiment with BHO Cop (linked to in the thread to which I linked above) and see whether you can identify which BHO is causing the problem.

    Look here and here too.

BTW, Spybot is now probably a better option than Ad-aware.

    Good luck.
