    I have a few things in there that I want out. How do I do it ? Programs keep adding things to the list that keep loading during boot up even though I've disabled them. Help!

    Thanks

    Some of the items in the startup list are needed by the system while others are used by programs that have been installed on your computer. If you're sure that you know the ones you want to remove are not needed by the system you can remove these from the list by doing the following;

    Open Regedit and navigate to:

    HKey_Current_User\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

    Right click on this folder and select Export from the menu. This will allow you to create a backup of this key in case the changes you make muke things up. A window will open asking what you want to name the file and where you want to store it. I would suggest that you name it HKCU Run and put it somewhere you can remember. Click Save, the backup will be created and the window will close.

    Now remove those programs listed under the Run key that you don't need by right clicking on them and selecting Delete from the pop-up menu.

    Then navigate to:

    HKey_Local_Machine\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

    Run the same backup and deletion directions that I outlined in the previous paragraph, except name this backup HKLM Run.

    NOTE: Mucking about in the Registry can be harmful to your system if you're not careful.

    I would also suggest that you check your sytems startup folders. To do this;

    Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Document and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\ Programs\Startup

    Remove the shortcuts to those programs that you don't want automatically starting each time you start/restart the system.

    Also check the startup folder at C:\Document and Settings\ "Your User Name "\Start Menu\Programs\Startup.

    Hope this helps.

    :D

    NOTE: The addresses listed above were corrected after reading the response from pn6 below.

    Hi: I tried to get to the place you suggested and found no directory "HKey_Current_User\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
    \Run" in "Regedit ". I did find "HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" but the file was empty.
    I then downloaded the little utility "DandyDon" informed me about but forn both "HK" tabs empty also. I'm running Xp Home if that makes a difference.

    Thanks
    Paul

    My bad, in looking back at my previous message I see that I left out part of the registry location. In typing it into the message I forgot to include the SOFTWARE sub-directory. Try looking in the following locations that I've corrected;

    HKey_Current_User\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

    and

    HKey_Local_Machine\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

    I to am running XP Home, so you should find them here. As a matter of fact, if I remember correctly they were located in the same place in my old 98 machine.

    But on the off chance that this still doesn't lead you to what you're looking for try this;

    Open MSCONFIG, click on the STARTUP TAP, click on the far right side of the LOCATION tab and while holding the mouse button down drag it to your right to expose the whole address of the items listed. Write these down and then do a search in the registry for these locations.

    Hope this helps, and sorry for the confusion in my first response.

    you can use a program called reg cleaner from www.winguides.com it has an easy to use interface that has a special tab of just startup programs. It also creates a backup of eveything so if you make a mistake and it plays HAVC on your system you can go back.

    Found the following :cool: program while surfing today. Thought it might help you do what your trying to accomplish in a little easier way.

    Not only does the program allow you to see where every program loads from on startup but it also allows you to disable programs from loading, add additional programs to the startup list, edit each programs command, delete programs from the list, print a list of programs that load, etc. Best of all it's free.

    Startup Manager

    After clicking on the link scroll down until you see Startup Manager 1.5 and click on it to download.

    HTH. :D

    Hi pn6
    Are you sure you can't just go through msconfig and uncheck these programs from loading at start up? You'll not need a third party program to do that?

    Go into msconfig, and under the start up tab, uncheck any unneccessary things from running at start up.
    (start...run...type in: msconfig click ok...and check under the start up tab)
    Here are two links to tell you what those items are:

    Msconfig entries
    and
    More of the same

    Hi all:

    Thank you all for the replies: I found my problem with regedit was the fact that I had already disabled all those startup items in msconfig/startup so they werent shoing up in th regedit areas.
    I enabled the ones I wanted to stop functioning and was able to delete their settings in regedit. Now they have no path in msconfig so they won't startup. (so far)

    Thanks
    Paul

    This thread can't be complete without some mention of StartupCop

    It will allow you to either disable or, if you so choose, permanently delete any start up items without having to venture into the registry.

    I recommend it highly. It's freeware and has been around long enough to have proven itself to be top notch stuff.
