I'm beginning to wonder if there's an back up program included in WinXP Home as I can't find anything on it. I was hoping there was an easy, built-in program that would copy selected files to a CD. I don't have a second drive and would prefer not to back up to a single partitioned HD. Am I just not looking in the correct spot, or........there really isn't one?

    doubleu,

The Windows XP Backup program is in the "Value Add" folder of your XP Install CD. The path is X:\VALUE ADD\MSFT\NT BACKUP where X is your cd-rom designation.

If you have an OEM system and didn't receive an install disk, you are out of luck. Yeah, I think that stinks too.

So far I have not been able to find the Value Add folder available for download but I suspect when enough people turn the heat up on M$, it may be made available. Personally I wouldn't use the program anyway since it isn't all that great. I do it the old fashioned way using a batch file.

Zephyr...... Many thanks. I did get a XP install disk when I purchased my system (the CD is actually labelled as a Product Revovery CD) and was able to install the Back Up feature from it.

I don't understand why this wouldn't be part of the initial install?

I guess it would be too much to expect MS to supply a hardcopy 'owners manual' with the purchase of the CD. I searched the 'help' function for anything on backup as well as MS' XP Support Centre...there's nothing that plainly itemizes it in 'help' and the only reference to backup on the Support site refers to XP Pro. Besides, it might reduce the number of elementary queries from novices like me.

    At any rate, thanks again.

Actually there is a command line entry that installs the backup program I have a OEM version with no disk but have installed the backup program. I forget the command line but you can find it on sites like thescreensavers.com
