Recently installed Win 7 and it worked fine. Then, a couple of mornings ago the display would not appear. After hard rebooting (turn off/on) a coupe of times it did come on. After the hard boot, the center green light and the 4 leeds at the right bottom (Dell 470) did come on "¦ but no display after the initial Dell Startop screen "¦ and that doesn't come up consistently. After removing all usb connections, I tried the following:

*booted and chose Safe Mode. After ca. 5 minutes the the display did come up, but Windows 7 did not.

    * booted from the install CD and chose the "Check Hardware" option. That never finished after 7 hours and I went on.

*then, from the install CD, I tried to do the system update "¦ but that can only be done from an installed Windows.

I have installed many application programs and without saying 'would rather not do it again'.

This could be your hard drive failling or one of the memory sticks.

With power off remove one stick of memory at a time and try to reboot, see if there is any improvement. If there is no change go to this link which gives you the diagnostics download and a book full of instructions. Follow the instructions to make bootable media which can run the tests even if you can no longer boot the PC. You may have to use another PC to make a bootable CD.

This is for Maxtor drives, if your OS is on the WD drive you may need to find the Western Digital diagnostics by searching from your web browser.

Click 'Start' and then type event viewer in the search box and click on 'Event Viewer' in the box above, you should be able to find a record of the error which may give an indication to the cause.

Did you use Microsofts Windows 7 upgrade advisor before installing windows 7. If not you may have compatability issues with one or more of your device drivers.

Take carefull note of any future error messages that you receive and report them here.

    Mark,

The boot drive on my Dell is Western Digital. I looked for WD diagnostic tools, and was referred to http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287#wdc

There are a number of WD diagnostic utilities listed ... and I am at a loss in deciding which, if any, I should use. The boot drive is SATA. I'd greatly appreciate it if you could take a look at the web site above and give me some further guidance.

Go to this link and select your hard drive by model name and number, it will take you to a list of available downloads for your drive which includes the appropriate diagnostics. You need the diagnostics for dos (CD). Download to your desktop and extract the file, it must then be burned to a CD as an image (ISO) file. If you do not have software to do this download this free software http://www.isoimageburner.com/
