    Hi,
I am trying to assist a family that is having problems getting onto facebook, the issues here involve a desktop and a laptop...They bring up the facebook home page that requires the email address and password and when both are typed in, it goes right back to the home page with no errors such as when the wrong password is typed in...They can access there facebook pages from other computers such as a friends but not from theirs...I have checked the following: (1) Windows Firewall, (2) the Linksys (cisco) firewall, (3) security settings, (4) added facebook to the trusted site, (5) ping facebook and recieved 4 replys, (6) tried facebook access via internet explorer using the ip address and web site address, (7) cleared cookies, (8) tried to access facebook using my acct with no luck either, (9) checked the hosts file even.
Nothing seems to be out of the ordinary and nothing that I can think of or even google for has made a difference...Every method tried so far just keeps refreshing the facebook home page...Ran virus scans in normal mode and safe mode, all shows zero infections...At a major loss as what can be causing this.

    Hi,
I did not suggest that because since everything else can be accessed on both desktop and laptop, I did not think we needed to try another browser. I was thinking more along the possibility of it being blocked from going into facebook once they signed in and what could block the next step is what's very puzzling at this point.

I tried to see if there was any parental controls going on and found none and even for what it was checked manage add-on's with no luck either...The only thing I didn't check until I find out otherwise of course was the block senders list probably because it did not seem to apply in this case.

The computers are now having other issues, difficulty accessing other web sites...Can someone confirm if this is related to script errors ? The reason I ask is, because on the bottom left corner it says "done with errors on page ".

If it is a script error which I believe are related to java should I then see if Java needs updating ? Or can someone provide other details as to what may be the problem now that it's not just facebook anymore. Thank you

    (3) Did a Java Update...has the latest updates.
    (4) Updated Flash Player...did not make a difference.
    (5) Ran Atf Cleaner earlier today as well as clean cookies...did not make a difference.

P.S... Was able to access other web sites with yellow triangle in left corner.

Master Green, try this (my wife had exactly the same problem and I tried everything you tried):

1: Make sure the box that says "Keep me logged in ", is unchecked.
2: Close your browser completely (if possible, disconnect from the internet aswell)
3: Reopen your browser and goto the FaceBook home page (where you need to log in)
4: Enter your username (Email address)
    5: Enter your password
6: Put a check in the box that says "Keep me logged in "

    Then see what happens..

I know a person who works for FaceBook Canada and when I told him of this problem this is what told me to try, and for some reason it seems to have worked. My wife hasn't had a problem with FaceBook since.

I don't know if it will work for you, but like I said my wifes problem was identical to yours.. I hope it helps...

    Hi,
Thank you...I think the owner did try that but I will double check and if by chance it was not done, will give it a try...Also, an atempt to download another browser failed...It's all very bizzare because I am able to go to other web sites and yet Facebook won't allow us to go beyond it's home page...I think I will also see if signing onto yahoo will alllow us in that way even though it's not the norm...Thank you again, will keep you all posted & updated.

    More update info:
Later this evening, we are gonna try the following:

    (1) Disable script debugging > and see if that fixes the Facebook issue ?

    (2) Will also try going into www.yahoo.com and then thru Yahoo, into www.facebook.com and see if we can access facebook after the sign in part is done.

I will post back here as soon as that is done...

    Those (1) & (2) won't change a thing!

This is what would be a huge concern to me:
    I'd recommend a Malware check.

    Hi Arie,
I did do that and nothing was found, that is why with the done with error message which I believe indicates a script error might play a role even though I am not certain it is connected but figured we have nothing to really lose as we go down the list of eliminations.

What I have here is, a windows xp desktop with a Linksys wireless N router hooked up to it, and a windows vista laptop along with a Mac laptop working wirelessly off of the router.

The desktop and vista laptop were getting on with no problems when a netgear router was connected. They changed the netgear for a Linksys wireless N router and now we have all these issues pending. I uninstalled the Linksys router and re-installed it myself and nothing has improved.

I personally was not present when they tried to download the other browser but when I try to access other web sites they both can do so but the done with error message appears and getting onto facebook is been very difficult.

    Update:
As Arie had mentioned both tricks mentioned by me earlier did not work...So I am going to try and by-pass the router, hard wire the laptop to the modem and see if that makes a difference...Will post back those results tomorrow.

The router was probably infected. I've seen this before when routers have the default username and passworf login. Malware can infect the router and change its DNS server entries. A client's router had Russian DNS server entries that redirected all Web requests.

You should do a Hard Reset on the Linksys:
Disconnect the modem from the Linkisys.
With the unit powered on, press and hold the reset button on back of unit for 30 seconds
Without releasing the reset button, unplug the unit and hold reset for another 30 seconds
Plug the unit back in STILL holding the reset button a final 30 seconds

After the reset, do NOT connect the modem. At this point, access the Linksys Web interface using http://192.168.1.1

    Login using:
    Username: (don't type anything)
    Password: Admin

Go to Administration section and change the login password, save settings.

Remove the power supply from the Linksys. Remove power supply from modem.

Connect modem to Linksys WAN port, power up modem, wait until it is finished booting.

Power on the Linksys, access its Web interface again and login.

Go to the setup or the status section and post the DNS server IP addresses here in this thread.

    Hi Tony C,,,
I believe I checked that because something I came across captured my attention in regards to the DNS but they appeared fine...Thank you for that info just the same.

    UPDATE:
A new router (Netgear N300) was installed and everything is fine now...Thank you all for your assistance.

P.S... The owner of the computer had asked me, why didn't we just change the router in the first place...I explained, the problems we were dealing with did not indicate router problems directly, so we did a process of elimination and when all was exhausted, we tried the trick of by-passing the router to now see if it was the router and luckily enough there was the problem (and further explained we may never know what the problem with the router was-but that's all behind us now...moving on).

I'll wager a hard reset will correct that router too. If don't want to fool with it have the guy send it to me, I could do something with it.

    Hi Tony C...
Sounds good but since it was purchased from a store, it was returned and due to the cost of the non-working one -vs- the cost of the new one, it ended up being an even exchange.

P.S... I did not consider a reset because they could still access the Internet, it was the done with errors on page notififcation and not being able to get on Facebook that complicated matters...Once the new router was installed, all those problems disappeared as well...The mystery will haunt us I'm sure.

    Thanks you.
