We have 3 computers on a TCP/IP LAN and we want to give access to a new user to only one of the computers using GoToMyPC and only to 2 - 3 programs on that particular computer. My wife and I already have Admin privileges for everything.

What is the easiest way to restrict their access to only 2-3 shared programs and nothing else on that one comp? We use XP-Pro?

Hi robls99. In order to set that many restrictions on one user account you are going to have to use group policy to set the accounts restrictions.

Before you start going through group policy take a look here, Windows XP Security Console.

    Evan,

That seems to be 7 years old software and I'm not sure it can restrict the user to only a couple of programs. Do you know if just setting up a new User Account offers that kind of restrictions for XP-Pro?

You can set up a guest account which should restrict the user from being able to modify or access system settings. To do this follow these steps:

Click Start< Control Panel< User Accounts< User Accounts< Create a new account. Create a new user and set the user as a limited user. Once that done click Start< Administrative Tools< Computer Management< Expand Local Users and Groups. Now click on the Users folder. Right click on the new user account that you just created and click properties. Click the Member Of tab. You will see that the user is a member of the users group. Highlight the users group and click the remove button. When thats done click the Add Button. In the dialog box that opens type Guests and click ok. Click ok again to close out both windows. Now the new user that you created will be a member of the guests group.

If you still want to restrict the user more than just using the restrictions that are in place in Windows you can also try a program called Windows Steady State.

You can use Windows Steady State to create a limited user and set whatever restrictions you want for that user. More info here.

    Evan Omo,

Thanks for the info on Steady State, didn't know that existed. Although I would never need its main function to "undo" any changes (and if that happened it would be disasterous) , it certainly has the ability to block users from using various programs and computer functions. I'll look into it more.
