I have picked up a used Lenova ThinkPad that is running on XP Pro. It was a work unit that was used by several people.

One of them set up a user in the name of his kid. When I loaded my Office 2003 software on it, it loaded under the kid's name even though I had gone into the Administrator Tools and changed that user name. So when I look at it using Admin Tools it shows my name, but when I right click and do Explore All it shows the kid's name but not my name.

And when I click Help/About it shows the software as registered to the rug rat.

My first question: How can I change that name on the system tree (C:\) ?

Next, the Office 2003 software seems to have installed fine and when I imported my contacts they loaded into the Contacts folder no problem.

However, when I click New to draft a new email and then click TO to choose a recipient, the selection window opens and is empty.

    Where are the contacts?

I suspect it is a file location issue in the set up but I can find it and correct it using options.

Any insight into these two issues will be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    Rick

Note: I used edit to try and explain it better. Whiskeyman, I'll check on that recovery partition in the morning. Thanks.

If it still has the Rescue and Recovery partition I would make the required CD/DVDs to do a fresh install. Once done download and install all updates including SP3. You can also go to Lenovo's site and see if there are any updated drivers. I picked up a couple of used Thinkpads and did fresh installs on both. It made a big difference on how they ran.

    From a PM .....

Okay. All this came about as the result of a job change, and a new routine that at present is demanding 50-55 hours a week in start-up attention. I keep finding loose ends hanging... My apologies for being so long getting back to this.

The laptop issue was resolved with the recovery option. After making sure I had the (little bit) of data off of it I used the recovery console to set it back as if it had just been taken out of the box.

From there I followed the routine set up procedure to get it going in my name.

Then, I reinstalled software again but instead of finagling with the Outlook import tools I installed iTunes, and then authorized the laptop as a computer on my iTunes account.

Finally, I synced my Contacts and other Outlook data onto my iPhone at my desktop, and then synced it again to the laptop.

Back door approach, but problem solved.

    Thanks again for the feedback.

    Rick
