I have done two searches. Found nothing.

I had a picture (.jpg etc) as Desktop background. For some reason, it disappeared and the Desktop is plain, one color. I have searched for the file and receive no hits. (File name still shows in the Control Panel/Display/Desktop; and...the interesting part...

When I click "Stand-by," the pic does flash on screen for few seconds, before the computer goes into the Stand-by mode.

Any ideas on what is going on or where that file may be sitting? I have searched all the folders and used the Windows search engine to list the missing file and files with the same extension.

BTW. I rarely use this unit - Toshiba Laptop, and ran Malwarebytes last time I used it and it detected two "Adware.AskSBAR" files which were deleted.

I fail to see how one might have precipitated having a "ghost" file that I cannot find. It may be that these are two different problems, and, if need be, this thread can be moved...I still would like to find the file.

Yes, search engine works fine and I just tested again to be sure.

BTW, I plan to bring the malware problem to the appropriate forum, after we get this oddity solved.

Did you get the .jpg file from your internet browser or was it saved in your My Pictures folder. If it was downloaded it will be a hidden file.

This problem could be directly connected to your virus infections.

Have a look in c:/windows/web/wallpaper, the image may have a different name.

If the image was set from Internet Explorer then look in:
    c:\Document and Settings \ <profile name> \ Application
Data \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ and is named Internet Explorer
    Wallpaper.bmp

If not malware adware related which is a distinct possibility try researching "Active desktop" wallpaper problems. It's been a long while snce I've seen or dealt with such biut as I recall kellys korner has some goodies that may help:

Somewhere in this Google hit list will be a post that will lead you there:
    active desktop issues

Thanks Ann and others. Will do as suggested.

So you know. I did search the background folder and others, but also sent same pic over from other computer, and installed it as the Desktop wallpaper and it is up.

Will go over and search again...then may run the mystery past the malware experts.

    Merci!
