When I click on certain buttons of amazon.com pages, some component of Firefox thinks there is something to download or open.

For example, a window opens saying:

"You have chosen to open ref=nb_sb_noss
    which is a: application/octet-stream
    from: http://www.amazon.com"

with choices to "open with" or "save. "

If I cancel the window, I can click again and get the normal function of the button.

Anybody have an idea what can cause this?

could you provide us with a link where these are happening, and the exact location of where the buttons are on those pages. It does help in trying to trouble shoot things. Thanks

    Firefox treatment of octet-streams

I also contacted amazon. They promised to look in to the problem and suggested I try the same pages for a few days to see if it was fixed.

I couldn't get the error today no matter how I tried.

The best thing I got from following these responses (thanks for them) was that it does seem to be a server problem. There doesn't seem to be anything in Firefox to identify what to do with octet-streams other than to run or save.

Basically, "octet-streams" is a Firefox way to tell you, that it's something it can't run, can't recognize, doesn't know how to handle it.
