How does one upgrade to a newer SeaMonkey without losing the data ?

to Z Purple Hippo: Well, I am now on this BBS, and the title does say my main question. I am able to use all my e-mail addresses from my old stable SeaMonkey, in the Thunderbird program with no loss. My main problem is should I stick with version 1.1.18, so as not to lose what websites I do have? Or, is it possible to upgrade to the newer version 2, which I gather is up to version 2.10?
I would like to be able to do so, if that is recommended! I just do not know how long my older version will continue to function, but if it will go on for years more, I will stick with it! Please advise?

I'm surprised nobody has already offered help on your thread. I first saw it just minutes after you posted it but didn't reply then because my memory for the exact procedure is so lacking. I made the upgrade many months ago when I upgraded to Windows 7 and it went well, but exactly how I did it isn't something I can recall any longer.

A day or two ago when I upgraded to the last version of SM I saw some info about the procedure you'll need, so I recommend you go either to the SeaMonkey Web site or else open your SM and click on Help, then on Check for updates. You'll see a vigorous caution about upgrading to the latest version from the one you have. As I recall, the workaround is to create a new profile, then download the latest version, then copy your old Bookmarks, Preferences, etc., to the new profile. Something like that.

To Bobbo: Okay, two questions: One, I have forgotten how to make a profile, so need some pointers on that, and Two: Do I make the new profile before or after downloading the new version?

An explanation of how to create a new profile can be found by opening SeaMonkey and clicking on Help. At least on my version of SM, there's a step-by-step explanation listed there.

You can download the latest version of SM anytime you want. The question is whether you should create a new profile before or after you run the SM set-up .exe file or not. The answer to that is probably at the SM download site.

boy you sure don't give people enough time to reply, do you!? Sometimes, it might take a day to two [or even more] for someone to come here and reply. Just because you posted a question now, it doesn't mean someone will reply to you within an hour or so. Its not like the SM newsgroups.

Now to John as for your questions to the personal email I received. First: I don't give SeaMonkey help via email.

Are you meaning the windowsBBS? IF so, I have no idea about the $38. It's never asked me for money. Anyways, I've never asked a question here, so I have no idea if it does or not. Maybe a WindowsBBS expert can chime in here.

Third: To ping someone, you usually put their name in the subject line, or on the first line of the posting.

Fourth: now your problem. If you're happy with SM 1, then stick with it. I have, and I'm happy with it. There are some pages that don't work, but I still have Firefox or Internet Explorer for those pages. Actaully, I use IE Tab for those IE only pages. There is one cavet with SM 1: You can't update java beyond 6_20. The java is for SM 2 and newer versions for Firefox, like 3.6+.

If you want to install SM 2 and take it for a spin, while still having SM 1, then be forwarned. If you want to install SM 2, don't. Don't get the installer version. Instead get the zipped version. The installer version will take over all your desktop SM 1 icons, and can make a real mess of things. Instead, download the zipped version, unzip it somewhere. Make a desktop icon for that seamonkey.exe version, double click on it, and off you go. No need to install. You can get the zipped version from here: ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/seamonkey/releases/2.0.10/win32/en-US

This will be your safe bet. If you don't like it, all you have to do is delete the SM 2 directory and its gone. You don't have to worry about SM 1 cause its safe.

As for SM 2: When you click to start SM 2 for the first time, it will create its own profile. Furthermore, it should (not always though) ask you if you want to import your SM 1 profile over. Say yes for this.

Remember, the profile for SM 1 is not compatible for the profile of SM 2.

If it doesn't ask you, then you need to "migrate" your SM 1 profile over to SM 2. And here's how to do that.

First, close SM 1 and SM 2. Next, click on the windows Start button, then run and enter:

C:\Location of the SM 2 exe file\seamonkey.exe -migration

NOTE: the "location of the SM 2 exe file" is the location of where you put SM 2.

NOTE: there is a space between .exe and -migration

Then follow the directions from there. Depending on how fast your computer is, and how big SM 1 profile is, this process could take from a few minutes to maybe a few hours. Also, your computer could freeze. Thats fine, let it. You'll have to wait it out.

No criticism intended. Not being an expert myself, I was hoping someone who is would reply to John before he gave up and went away mad. Some newbies do that, not realizing exactly what you've said about delays, especially since this BBS gets posts from people all around the globe, and one person's on-line time may be others' sleep time. But we're all volunteers and the help is free, so John should be in good hands now.

John You might gain some benefit by reading a web page I put together some time back regarding a problem another WindowBBS User was having.

Personally I, prefer SM 1.1.19 over the SM 2.0 version and plan to continue using 1.1.19 as my main program. However, I have both versions installed and have had ever since 2.0 came out.

I could remove SM 2.0 except I keep it installed to reference when helping my classmates, friends and others.

My findings indicate neither version knows the other is on the computer since SM 2.0 uses a different path location for stowing the Profile and thus the mail and everything else providing your using the default settings.

As I recall, when I installed SM 2.0 it went in clean and did not pickup or ask for any of the current profiles.

AND I have had no conflict problems of any kind.

This web page basically explains one method for getting the mail from SM 1.1.19 to SM 2.0 once 2.0 is installed.

I call it the "Dunce's Corner" because I created a web site for my High School Alumni and I'm all time helping my former classmates some of who are pretty good dunces, mainly because we all graduated eons before computers.

Being an old guy, my final comment is this, "Don't Fix it if it ain't broke" and I have found nothing that SM 2.0 will do that 1.1.19 can't do and yes some will talk about a thing called security, well I know of nothing of mine anyone would want.

you're not the only one sticking with SM 1. Some of my mail stylish scripts won't work in SM 2 mail. And I find the coloring to SM 2 to be a bit dull looking compared to SM 1, which is very bold and bright. Furthermore, SM 2 won't install my 2nd favorite addon, multizilla

The devs can continue to talk security, but I have asked them to prove it, and yet they can't. All I've asked is some website that will steal my information, but to date they haven't.

 

To Tony: no I am not a Boston original, I came from Cleveland ,Ohio. My father was born in New York city. But I am sure, that all the Boyle's on the East Coast had to come from the same area of Ireland. Maybe a few generations apart.

In any event, nothing will be lost, as you can see in Old Chief's link.
It is interesting that a lot of people say that the profile is lost, while one pointa one program to the wrong path.
I hope that you are able to proceed.
Note: the older version of Seamonkey had the browser part, at least, based on the old Netscape 6/7 and Mozilla suites, while the new Seamonkey is based on Firefox.
The old versions are no longer supported, meaning that there are no security updates for them, but they work fine, otherwise.
