Hi all, ............... Recently I installed Gmail to use for a special application. Since then I noticed that my normal Thunderbird mail (v. 2.0.0.24) has been very slow to load. In the past 24 hours I received 10 pieces of Gmail and only one on Thunderbird. Under Sever Settings I have TB check for new messages at Startup (Gmail is not opened.) I'll admit to an unfamiliarity with the new Gmail but my search through that site did not uncover any precedence for it over TB. Alternately, I could not find any thing in TB to establish a TB precedence.

I can remove the Gmail system and set another account in TB but should this be necessary? Maybe someone who has multiple e-mail systems operating can provide some guidance.

Please explain that. Gmail is not an installable program.

this speaking from someone who has over 20 gmail accounts: each account is set up in Thunderbird, and each account has their own inbox, sent, drafts, etc. Oh yeah, I use gmail as pop, and I don't have to login into my gmail accounts for atleast 25 days, and I only do it to check the spam and make sure there's no real mail there.

To use TB for your gmail accounts, login to your gmail account, then at the top right you will see Settings. Click on that, then Forwarding and POP/IMAP, and follow the instructions for either pop or imap. Then at the bottom, it will tell you how to configure TB or other programs.

So, what exactly do you mean that "gmail is stealing [your] thunderbird e-mail?" Gmail can't steal your mail from TB.

TonyT, ............. I answered your reply immediately after receiving it but for some reason it never got posted. Using the word "installed" was a poor choice. Better I should have said that I established a Gmail account. As I'll repeat in my next post, I have closed that account. Thank you for your interest.

Z Purple Hippo............. Thank you for your detailed reply. Wow! 20 Gmail accounts, how do you keep track of them? The use of the word "stealing" was meant as an attention grabber. I know that Gmail is not stealing from TB. It is interesting to note however, that in about 48 hours I have received only two TB e-mails while Gmail continues to show the remaining bulk. Because I have used Thundebird for several years and have it set just as I want it, I have decided to give up on Gmail and use multiple accounts in TB. I have closed the Gmail account and already see an increase in mail from TB.

I have no idea what you mean by this. Are you using TB to download your gmail mail? If so, how? Are you using POP or IMAP to access your mail? We need a little more information go understand whats going on.

It may be something similar to freepops, which allows me to set up my Yahoo Webmail as a pop account. I know that freepops can be used to run several, otherwise, Webmail accounts, as pop, but it break several times. I, never, figured out way, but I had not received any Yahoo mail in TB since Aug.28, and, then all in a sudden, I got an avalanche of mail. Some three days ago it quit again.

Freepops was good, in its time, but now, I don't know. After all, you don't need freepops for hotmail, gmail, aim/aol mail, or even for yahoo mail. I got rid of mine a long time ago, so I don't know how freepops work.

Freepops has been having problems from day one, because of changes made by mail portals. Yahoo has been one of the worst.
Personally, I have used Yahoo through Freepops for only one reason. My wife works mail has a mail forwarding feature, which broke over one month ago. She had one of our ISP account dedicated to mail forwarding, but it quit forwarding. We would still like to have a dedicated address, and was able to change it, successfully, to my Yahoo address. However, I can get the mail in Yahoo Webmail, and the posts to her, are, then, manually, forwarded to her old address. A nuisance, but manageable if it had been possible to do in Thunderbird (by using the Move function). I will have to go to the freepops website, and see if there is any update, or is my problem due to issues with my Firewall,and/or Antivirus program.

if you read what I said, I said you don't need freepops to access yahoo mail. Yahoo mail is now pop or imap {I think} accessible.

POP and imap are only available in the paid yahoo mail.
And yahoo has been busy negating freepops access again.

How are you POPing your Yahoo email? What are the server settings?

I've had a yahoo email account for almost 10 years and POP has been unavailable for at least the last 5 years. You must upgrade to Mail Plus to be able to POP yahoo email, or else use a 3rd party tool like Freepops.

I've had these settings for years and never had a problem whatsoever:

    for pop:

    server name: pop.mail.yahoo.com
    port: 995
    user name: whatever-name-you-have@yahoo.com
    use secure connection: ssl

    for smtp:

    server name: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
    port: 465
    use name and password: checked
    user name: whatever-name-you-have@yahoo.com
    use secure connection: ssl

Are you using US for location in your yahoo account? All areas other than US can pop the free yahoo mail.

OK, re free Yahoo email & POP.

Free Yahoo email cannot be POPed if the mail account is set to US for location. The POP your yahoo free email if live in the US you must login to your yahoo account > access Options > Mail Options > Account Information > change your location to Asia > save settings > logout > delete all cookies > login again > POP and Forwarding will now be availabe.

I no longer need to use Freepops.
