OE6 Slow & Injured

Hi,

Was looking into my daughter's computer yesterday. For a few days now, OE6 is getting slower loading and really buggy. It takes about 2 minutes before it's logged in on a cable modem. Stranger yet is that if you click on something like "new contact ", you're in for another couple of minutes until it will let you do what you need to. Once it's up, though, sending & recieving mail is no problem for some reason.

(PC is virus, trojan, & spyware free. Runs like a top with everything but....) No new programs of late. Custom P3 750 box, 98SE, Cable modem.

Should mention that the first step was to scanreg /restore a saved, good copy of the registry. System File Checker says that everything is okay. Computer just smokes in every other program or game. Just OE6 is "injured" in some way. Sorry, but that's the best way to describe it. Any injury doctors here? Maybe an injury lawyer should get involved???


Okay, enough jokes. After perusing some threads here, I have done the following:

(1) Tried the IE repair tool.

(2) Removed OE via control panel & reinstalled via Windows Update

(3) After "Step-2" I removed again and also deleted all leftover contents in OE folder. Also removed all contents of identity folder in Windows. (We run Express Assist 6 for a backup program) I then downloaded the IE6 setup and ran with it. I allowed it to load everything in, full install, including OE6.

(4) I repeat "Step 3" again, only this time let Norton Utilities and Registry Healer clean everything up before the reloading of IE6. (am well accustomed what to let the Reg program do or not do already. Used it for years now)

OE6 still loading painfully slowly and stumbling here and there. LAN setup is just great as per IE's performance.

After "Step 4" no folders were present, only contact list for some reason. Still had problems. Restored folders and problem is still the same.

We give up. What the heck now? Where do we go from here short of utter eradication of IE/OE or full system format?

Please be patient with us, as whatever you post may take a while to get at today. Also, I may have to run from house to house. (don't really want to drag the PC into my place just yet) Okay????

Just one question before I undertake some of the fine info on the link you so graciously posted.

Is OE6 similar to 5 or 5.5 when it comes to this stuff? Maybe I should just play with it and use some common sense? You tell me.

Whatever you tell me, though, just be careful not to "break" any of the "ten suggestions" and steer me way off course.

The instructions hold good for both OE5 and OE6 (and everything in between!).

Just what I needed to know.

What I wouldn't do to get a hold of all your "Super-Geek" bookmarks! I can only imagine how valuable they are.

It might be a day or two, maybe less, until I can go over there and thoroughly try everything from Brett's link. Please be patient with us.

As for everyone else, feel free to blast away with anything and everything you have in the way of links like his. The more the merrier! Go ahead and bury me in them. We will appreciate them all, I assure you! Who knows? Maybe my OE is right around the corner from "injury" itself???????

Hi, Everyone

Okay, so I may be a bit tardy but I finally tried out everything in the link that Brett posted to me.

Sad to say that it's still a "no-go" with this problem. Everything seems to work fine once OE finally loads up except for adding new contacts. At least so far, the painful slowness of the OE load and the contact thing are the only two signs that not all is well.

Some news though. My daughter says that yesterday OE just hopped to it like there was nothing wrong at all. It did this for two loadups. On the third loadup, it failed and started acting weird again. Go figure.

We give up. I am writing this from her PC right now.

Any more ideas anyone??????

Thanks a whole bunch, Brett. I copy/pasted everything in your link into a Word doc for possible future problems down the road. Great stuff in that link but not the right stuff for this glitch. Thanx again, Brett!

In the mean time, we shall wait for what anyone has to offer us here. OE does work, but a pain is a pain and it needs to be fixed.

Hey, look at the bright side...........just when you thought I wouldn't, I posted back, right? Everyone should post back, good or bad.

 

Uncheck the option which causes your anti-virus program to launch at startup, reboot and see whether things are any better. If not, follow the instructions here to completely remove OE from your system and then reinstall.

I shall do as you recommend. Once again, it will probably be a day or two or three but I will do it. The AV trick as well as the complete removal of OE.

The last time I removed OE I didn't go quite far enough. Thanks for the link. Now I know where else it lives and I will eradicate it completely then reinstall everything.

I shall post back. Rest assured of that much. Whenever I get over there I will try it and post back to you all.

UPDATE

I am SO sorry for posting back this late. (some one month later) Things is, my daughter was content with her Outlook Express running lame until just lately when it came to the point that she wasn't able to save attachments with it.

I followed the last link posted by you, Brett, to the letter, twice, with no change after reinstall. I gave up. She needed her email working "yesterday" if you know what I mean.

What I did do was fire up her Outlook program (not "Express ")and imported everything into there. It works like a charm. No glitches and fast as greased lightning in every way.

Just thought I would do what everyone should do and post back, good or bad. In this case, the problem will never be found out. She wants XP installed soon so a format is in the works. I won't be playing with Outlook Express on that machine again. If it were my machine, you bet I would! I don't care how long it would have taken but I know that with everyone's help here, we would have licked it.

All's well that ends well. Thanks from the bottom of my heart for your help, Brett! Thanks to everyone for that matter!

P.S. I hope this is coming across the way I meant it. I finally tried Brett's link only today, and not some time ago. That's why I posted this as soon as I got home. Didn't mean to sound like I was tardy posting back. I was just tardy in applying the excellent information in the last link.
