You might want to go to your bank's website and ask them or if they could recommend any alternative.

The only thing this is useful for (besides making money for the people that sell it), is when you are using an infected computer. Your credit card details are encrypted before they pass through your computer.

Now people that order stuff on-line usually also do their banking on-line, so if their computer is infected, they still be at a high risk for identity theft (and loosing their bank login details).

So as you see: convenient: maybe, but that's about it.

In reading some reviews, I'm not seeing anything that makes me want to spend my money on it. If you keep your computer, Windows, and your browser of choice updated and patched, use a real-time malware scanner, avoid risky practices like illegal filesharing at P2P sites or via torrents, and you ensure you have a secure connection before entering your credit card data, you will be fine.

That said, even with this device, there is still the risk the site you are buying from has been hacked so I recommend you use the same card for all on-line transactions and that it has a low daily limit. Finally, check your statement carefully for charges you don't recognize.

Yup, correct. That's why I said that the only advantage I see is for the people selling it....

    Just to add some facts:

It's far safer and secure to make online purchases by typing the credit card info than it is to pay using a credit card at a store or a restaurant. Why? Because that waiter you handed your card to can just write down the card info and make purchases online using your card. Or he can swipe the card using a similar device as Smartswipe, which stores the card info and later he retrieves that info. (there are such devices that fit in a pant's pocket)

If Smartswipe was small enough to carry around in a laptop bag it could be useful, esp if frequent wifi hotspots.

Good point - but I also think it might be indicative of our reservations to even try it.

I don't know if you'll find any people here who have tried it. Our opinion is clear: It's not anything one would want/need.
