I was wondering what might be considered too many programs for a system of my computer's specification (see 'My System' in my profile panel to the left of this message and also in my signature below)? I realize, of course, that it all depends on the nature of the programs I have installed but perhaps someone could give a general opinion or some general advice. I see, by the way, that I have 160 programs installed. I've added my Task Manager details in two attachments. Thanks.:)

Hi Lugwalker. You do have a lot of processes running. A large amount of those processes are services that are running in the background. There are some software and windows services that you can disable from running which will decrease the amount of processes showing in task manager.

Take a look at this link that describes what windows services you can safely disable, Black Vipers Services Guide.

I don't recgonize every process in task manager but there are processes that belong to some programs that you can uninstall if you don't need them.

It would probably be easier if you could post a screenshot showing all of your installed programs and then post it here and I can then make recommendations on which programs you can remove safely.

Ok you certainly have a lot of programs installed.

Here is the list of programs that I would remove from your system if you don't need them. Now since everyone uses their computer differently you probably will use some programs that I may list as unecessary. Don't worry about that.

Here is the list of programs that I think you should uninstall. Now if you do use a program is this list then don't uninstall it.

Thanks for that, Evan. I'll be reviewing the situation and eliminating anything superfluous. Much obliged.:)

Please pardon me for jumping in, but there's a big difference between the number of installed programs and the number of running processes.

I have well over 160 programs installed, plus another 40 or so that don't require installation, but normally I don't have more than 65 to 70 processes running at any given time.

It sounds to me as though lugwalker's computer is loading (i.e. running) all those programs at startup ... if that's the case he doesn't need to uninstall them, he just needs to prevent them from running at startup. Programs like Starter, or Autoruns (which doesn't require installation), make it simple to do that ... just uncheck the programs that shouldn't be run at startup.

    HTH.

Hi Jim. Thanks for the input. Even though lugwalker does have a lot of programs installed I want to have the OP uninstall any programs that they don't need regardless of whether they start up with Windows or not since this will free up harddrive space.

Furthermore, this will improve startup time already since some of those programs will be starting up with Windows anyway. Then once that step is done I will have the OP start trimming their startup list using Autoruns like you have suggested.

So regardless, its good that Lugwalker is uninstalling programs that they don't need to be installed on the machine.

Well, Jim and Evan, I've taken on board your advice.

I cleared a lot of space on my hard drives - C:/D: - and stopped a lot of un-needed processes/programs from running at start up.

My C: drive now has 40% free space and my D: drive now has 60% free.

I had 63 programs/processes running on startup and now I have 20 (thanks to StartUp Cop). I examined everything before I disabled a program/process and didn't do anything without knowing exactly what I was doing. I've started and restarted my computer several times and all is well.

    Thanks again. :)

Great job. Wow what a huge difference in the number of running processes that are running on your system. Its great that you were able to successfully trim down your program and startup list. I'll bet your computers performance has dramatically improved.

Since this issue is now resolved please mark this thread as 'Resolved'.

    Lugwalker ...

Understand, first of all, that I'm expressing a personal opinion, about what works for me on my system (XP Pro SP3).

I don't think it was necessary to have uninstalled as many programs as you did ... it was only necessary to prevent them from loading at startup.

As mentioned in my last post, I have over 160 programs installed, as well as over 40 which run without requiring installation, yet I usually have only about 65 processes running at any given time. I run a lot of the same programs that you do, but I run most of them only when necessary. Even if I run them only once a year, it's more convenient to have them installed than to have to install them when I want to use them.

It's all well and good if you need to free up space on your hard drives, but (IMHO:)) there are better ways to do it ... run a program like CCleaner, which will clean out a lot of trash, including your Recycle Bin, and use its Registry cleaner feature as well. Because you use Diskeeper, remember to defrag your drives from time to time.

FWIW, even with all the programs I have installed, my C: drive (which contains only the folders for Docs & Settings, Program Files, and Windows) runs only about 22GB. All of my data is on other partitions.

Everyone organizes and uses his/her computer in a way which suits him/her the best. That's one of the very best features of Windows ... you DON'T have to accept it the way the Gnomes of Redmond install it.

    Evan ...

    OP?

Like yourself, Jim, I haven't uninstalled many programs. I've chiefly removed unwanted or duplicated stuff from my drives and, more importantly, stopped 66% of the running-from-boot processes/program. I've just been busy with my housekeeping. :)
