On a second computer which I have, I decided to update to XP Service Pack 3 from my present SP2. The download went successfully and the installation went over half way before a small window popped up saying 'Access Denied' and the install was aborted. I was then informed that the installed files would be deleted and I would return to my former state and that possibly my system mightn't work (it did).

Has anyone any idea why this might have happened? Is there any hope for ever being able to install SP3?

    Thanks. :)

I've read the articles, Evan, and will report back when I've followed the suggested remedies. Thanks.:)

Upon the suggestion to restart, then download and install the standalone SP3 Network Installation for IT Professionals from the MS Downloads website, I went ahead and did so. Unfortunately, the results were the same: Access Denied.

The next suggestion was to restart again, disable antivirus and malware programs and reinstall SP3. I did so but with the same outcome: Access denied.

I'll have to learn to live with SP2, it seems.

It is most likely the permissions settings that are causing the problem, you have not mentioned trying this part of the fix. Either use the Fix-It download or carefully follow the registry edits.

Support for SP2 finished in July this year so if you do not update you may leave your computer vulnerable to attack.

    markmadras is correct.

If you don't get SP3, there's an increasing chance you'll get infected sooner rather than later.

You have to run the Fix It or do the manual fixes as outlined under ADVANCED TROUBLESHOOTING on the link Even suggested.

    Thank you, gents, problem solved.:D

You were correct in reminding me that I needed to run the 'Fix it' (anyone else running 'Fix it' to resolve this problem should be aware that it takes an unusual amount of time to complete its task). After doing that I restarted my computer and, after forty-seven Windows updates, went into Control panel>System and confirmed that Service Pack 3 was now onboard.

Many thanks for your invaluable assistance!:)

Awesome. I am glad that your issue is now resolved.

Normally whenever you come across the access denied error message when installing SP2 or SP3 its most likely the file permissions that need to be reset so its great that you were able to get SP3 installed.

Just make sure that you also install the other security updates that you need for Windows XP by running Windows Update (Start< All Programs< Windows Update).

Indeed, Evan. My system was set for automatic updates so almost fifty updates were installed after SP3.:)
