Hi, I'm using IE 8 and an XP Sp3 PC.

I noticed just today that for some reason I have to click the back button TWICE RAPIDLY-- i.e., do a "double click" on it -- to actually go back to the previous web site I was on when using Google search.

For example, if I click on and explore one of the search results from a query, I have to then double click it to go back to the search results again.

Just clicking it once appears for a split second like it's going back to the previous page, but then it reverts to the same page I am already on.

Any idea how to fix it?

    Thanks.

Hi dkline. Some websites that you visit will require you to press the back button a few time in order to go back to a previous website. This is done mainly to keep the user on the particular site. Does it happen on every website that you visit?

Also you will experience this behavior if you have a large hosts file installed. The reason for this is because a hosts file can block ads in webpages and you would have to click the back button multiple times in order to go back to the previous page.

What you are experiencing is normal behavior.

Thanks, Terminator. But this behavior is new to me.

It happens only when trying to get back to the search results page while exploring various listings, and it happens every single time.

Also, do you know how to change IE settings so that a link that opens in a new window opens full screen rather than in a 2X2 inch size?

    Thanks.

Ooops, how weird. I just had a power outage for half a second, and when the PC rebooted, the strange double-click behavior was gone.

I'll see if it comes back again, but as of right now I chalk up the experience (once again) to the power of the reboot, which cures about 80% of PC headaches.

After 30 years of using PCs, you'd think I would have remembered to try a reboot.

Its amazing how just rebooting Windows will cure most weird problems.

Anyway if the problem happens again it could be because of having a large hosts file installed so I personally wouldn't worry about it.

    1. Open IE to a page with links
    2. Right click a link and in the menu that opens, left click Open in New Window
    3. In the small window that opens, hover the cursor over a corner or an edge until it turns into a double headed arrow
    4. Once you have the double headed arrow, press and hold the left mouse button and drag the window to the size and placement you want
    5. Close the original window. This is important. If you don't close the original window first, this will not work.

Close the window you resized and all future secondary windows should open to the size and placement you chose.
