I have a installation disc for my dell XP laptop.
    I had a crash so I did a reinstall.

But the "other devices" in the device manager list are not installed.
Includes ethernet controller, multimedia audio controller, network controller, pci modem, video controller.

Without these, I can't get to the internet to get drivers.

I went to the dell support site and downloaded some intel pro wireless drivers for the modem to a thumb drive but that isn't getting accepted with a reinstall of drivers.

Can I download a generic device driver for my wireless?

Hardwiring to the internet with a cat5 cable didn't work either.

All the drivers you need are on the Dell site. If you give me the full name and model number of your laptop I'll guide you through it.

If you have the correct driver for the wireless device on your thumb drive you would need to copy it to your hard drive and then install it. Is that what you did?

I let the driver search function look in the thumb drive for the driver, I did not copy it to the c: drive.

    It's a Dell inspiron 6000

OK, this is the page for your computer and all the drivers.

    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...emID=INS_PNT_6000&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

Open the Network tab and download the drivers marked as urgent. Get these on to your hard drive, easiest place to put them is on the desktop. Then try to install them from there.

The driver search function may not be looking on external devices, I'm not sure, so best get the drivers onto your hard drive. I think the intel pro wireless driver you got is the wrong one for your PC.

This should get the wireless card running. Then you can download all the other drivers you need directly to the PC.

Let me know how you get on.

That is the page I found for my computer using the service tag. I downloaded the network drivers (intel proset) to the thumb drive and moved them over to the problem computer. I dragged the driver from the thumb drive to the desktop. The device driver update tool would not recognize anything on the desktop, the OK button remained grayed out. I selected the thumb drive but that ultimately did not work. Still no drivers

Why are you trying to install the intel proset. My instruction said you should get the drivers marked as urgent, that does not include the intel drivers which are marked as optional.

I believe you have the wireless mini PCI card which has its drivers marked as urgent.

Try to follow my instructions again. If you have the right driver it should install.

If there is a specific reason why you are using the intel driver then please tell me so I know what is going on. If you look at the manual on the Dell site it will show you how to remove the wireless card, you can then see for yourself its name and number. It should relate to one of the drivers in the list that is marked as urgent.

I think I found the problem. using your link, Dell defaulted to MY service tag. I chose "all" drivers and I just found more choices...trying them now, stand by

I downloaded the two urgent network drivers to the connected computer hard drive. I copied them to a thumb drive. I plugged the thumb drive into the bad computer and dragged the two drivers to the desktop. The device manager will not load those drivers

OK, can you just confirm a couple of things so I know exactly what you are doing.

When you go into device manager what are the details given for the wireless card under Network Adapters if there is more than one device let me have the precise details exactly as written.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but when you dragged the driver from the thumb drive did it create a copy or a shortcut.

I have just gone through the process on my windows XP installation and realised you cannot browse to any files on the Desktop during a manual driver installation so I assume you have been allowing the PC to find the driver automatically or you would have also found this problem. (Long time since I used XP)

Try this method doing it all manually then we can be sure of what is taking place.

First move the drivers to MyDocuments, you can make a new folder if you wish just remember where the driver is.

From Device Manager click on Network Adapters to see the Wireless Adapter.

Double click the Adapter , click on General tab , make sure the box at the bottom is showing "Use this device (Enable)" if not change it. Then click on Reinstall Driver.

The Hardware Wizard will open, check "No not this time" click Next, check "Install from a list or spcific location (Advanced)" click next.

Check "Search for best driver in these locations" click Browse.

Find the Driver file and click OK. Any more prompts from there should be obvious (I couldn't run it myself without having a driver to install)

Hopefully this will do the job, I think at present the computer is simply not locating where the driver is saved.

Had the same problem on a friends computer. Dell Inspiron 6000 lap top. You should have 2 discs. 1 operating system, 2 drivers and utilities. Drivers and utilities will show you everything that is installed on the computer with a check mark, install everything that is checked.

I found when I tried to download from the Dell website (because friend did not let me know there were 2 discs) I had to first download and install the Dell download utility

Also I found I had to allow windows to manage wireless. Hope this is of some help

You must install the Notebook System Software, then intel chipset drivers in that order and before anything else.

Under "network Adapters" there is 1394 Net Adapter

    In "Other Devices" I have:

    Ethernet controller
    Multimedia audio controller
    Network Controller
    PCI modem
    Video controller

All of these Other Devices have a yellow question mark

When I Sent the drivers to the desktop from the thumb drive it created a shortcut. When I dragged them to the desktop it was not a shortcut, an application.

I tried various variations including let the computer find the best solution. Rebooted with drivers on the desktop. Directed the search to the thumb drive, etc...

You missed a very important part of my instructions:

If you had followed my instruction to install the drivers manually you would have noticed that you cannot browse to the dektop when locating the driver. This tells me you have not read the instructions I gave, please follow then more carefully or my efforts to help you will be in vain.

But first, I got something wrong, as pointed out by Ij50 the drivers have to be installed in a certain order, sorry about that, long time since I did a clean install.

There is a button for 'Driver Installation Instructions' near the top of the drivers download page that I gave you the link for. This will tell you which drivers to install and what order to install them.

Use my instructions to install the drivers.

Please make sure you read and follow all the instructions from me and on the Dell site. You only need to miss one thing and it won't work.

Let us know how it goes.

If you continue to have problems getting the drivers to load I would suggest you burn them to a CD. If you make a CD with all the required drivers on it that could come in usefull on another occasion.

    Mark

You did not post the "My Documents" instructions till recently. I have not had a chance to retry the repair since you posted that update to your instruction set. I did post yesterday what I saw in the device manager for information purposes since you made mention of "Network Adapters" and all I have in the network adapters folder is a 1394 device.

I'll be trying another repair this evening using the recently added idea of placing the drivers in MyDocuments.

    Thanks

OK, I understand, but I owe you a big apology:eek:, having gone into the Dell site for full driver installation instructions I have discovered that once you have the drivers on your desktop all you have to do is double click them and they should install automatically.

Having said that, please also follow the Dell instructions for the order of drivers installation.

This should all start to happen now.

    Here's a stupid question...

Dell says to install the notebook system software drivers first. I downloaded those drivers and put them on the desktop. Now what? There's no "install" button that I can see anywhere.

also, I tried to drag/drop the various drivers to mydocuments but the computer will not let me do that.

    Stumped.

Double click the driver icon and it should install automatically.

As long as this works, putting them on the desktop should not be an issue.

This is the instruction from the Dell site for installing that first driver from your desktop. I can't understand why this is not working so have another go following these instructions word for word.

Does the driver appear on your desktop as described below R120775.exe?

All the drivers have their own set of instructions on there own download page.

If this is still a problem try to do the above directly from the thumb drive.

Don't forget that the chipset driver has to be done next.
