    Hi,
PC has winxp pro + sp1. my 'recycle bin' disappear on desktop. I couldn't find it in win explorer either. I try to resolve by performing 4 methods without sucess :

Method 1: Use the program that removed the Recycle Bin to restore the Recycle Bin

If you are using the classic Windows XP Start menu
    a. Locate the following registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\ClassicStartMenu
    b. In the right pane, right-click the following registry DWORD value, and then click Modify:
    {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

    ----------(No {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} only have [Default]/data=value not set; {450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}/1 & {871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}/1)----------

    c. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK. (The TweakUI utility sets this value to 1 to hide the Recycle Bin icon.)

Method 2: Edit the registry to restore the Recycle Bin
To edit the registry to make the Recycle Bin icon reappear on the desktop, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
    3. Locate the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace

----------(No 'NameSpace' sub folder only 'CleanupWiz' sub folder )----------

    4. Right-click the registry key that you located in step 3, point to New, and then click Key.
    5. Type {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}, and then press ENTER.
    6. Click the new {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} key that you created in step 5.
    7. In the right pane, double-click the (Default) entry.
    8. In the Edit String dialog box, type Recycle Bin in the Value data box, and then click OK.
    9. Close Registry Editor.

Method 3: Use the Group Policy Object Editor to restore the Recycle Bin
To use the Group Policy Object Editor to restore the Recycle Bin:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type GPEDIT.MSC in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. Under User Configuration, click Administrative Templates, and then double-click Desktop.
    3. Double-click Remove Recycle Bin icon from the desktop.
    4. Click the Setting tab, click Not Configured, and then click OK.

To use Registry Editor to restore the Recycle Bin:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
    2. Locate the following registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\NonEnum

    ----------(No 'NonEnum' sub folder)----------

    3. Click the registry key that you located in step 3, and then in the right pane, click the following registry DWORD value:
    {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
    4. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click Yes.
    5. Close Registry Editor.

    Workaround
If you cannot restore the Recycle Bin by using the resolutions that are listed in this article, work around this issue by creating a shortcut to the Recycle Bin:
    1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    3. Click the View tab, and then click to clear the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) check box.
    4. Click Yes when you receive the warning message, and then click OK to close the Folder Options dialog box.
    5. Click Folders on the toolbar.

Note If Folders is not visible on the toolbar, point to Toolbars on the View menu, and then click Standard Buttons.
    6. In the left navigation pane, under Folders, locate the Recycle Bin folder, and then drag the Recycle Bin folder to the desktop.

    ----------(No recycle bin folder found)-----------

    7. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    8. Click the View tab, and then click to select the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) check box. Click OK.

I was then advised to run "sfc /scannow ". Only one recycle bin back in HDD but not on desktop.

I also try to perform 'search' on win explorer, it doesn't work. 'Seach' displays message "search companion + '!' inside yellow triangular box + ok button ". I hit ok then stop. Nothing happens !

    Please help, thanks.

If you have the recycle bin showing on the hard drive you should be able to create a shortcut on the desktop by using click & drag.

You could also try running a repair install from your XP disc, follow these instructions.
This should put the recycle bin back to its default position on the desktop.

It's a hidden folder and you won't see it unless do:
Folder Options > View > show system files, show hidden files and possibly show protected op sys files.

Thanks, markmadras. Got the recycle bin back.

Sorry, TonyT. It's a different issue altogether.

The 'search' function does not work. I open win explorer then right click any folder, chose 'search...' an 'search result folder' open up. On the left pane, I then use "*.*" in 'all or part of file name' & check 'specified date' in 'when was it modified'. (there are files with today's date in this folder) I then hit 'search' button.

The right pane displays message box "search companion + '!' inside yellow triangular box + ok button ". Nothing happens & no file displays!

This might not be very descriptive. I have a screen shot of this problem. Is it posible to paste it here or email to some general account so that you can have a look ? Thanks

Oh good, recycle bin returned. Did you do it with click and drag? I'm guessing you did not do the repair install as this would also have fixed the search error. The microsoft article below will tell you how to fix the search error without running a repair install. After virus removal there may be some other registry errors to deal with.

    markmadras,
I created a reclycle bin sc on desktop. Unfortunately, as mentioned in my original post (#1) in Methods 2, there is "No 'NameSpace' sub folder only 'CleanupWiz' sub folder ". Thanks.

    Hi Ocean

From Kelly Theriot's site (under S)

    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm

    Search - Doesn't Work

Open Explorer and go to the Windows\Inf folder. Locate the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and select Install. You'll need your XP CD or the files from the I386 folder. (This fix will require you to have your Win XP CD).

The Windows\Inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders. You can also click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%\Inf to open directly to the Inf folder.

    Hi Barbara-Ann,

Thank you. The solution you offered is for the following problem :
Error: "A file that is required to run Search Companion cannot be found. You may need to run setup ".
Unfortunately, this isn't the problem that I have.

The 'search' problem that I have is "Yellow Triangle with Exclamation Point" on your link, From Kelly Theriot's site under 'S'. It offer the solution which I can't modify 'NameSpace'. Please look at the Method 2 in my original post (#1), there is "No 'NameSpace' sub folder only 'CleanupWiz' sub folder "

Ocean - on Kelly's page there is the following...

    Yellow Triangle with Exclamation Point

Option 1. Depending on your version of TweakUI, run it, go to the Desktop settings and put the check mark back in Search Results.

Option 2. If you don't have TweakUI installed, or this option isn't available in your version, copy and paste the following lines into a Notepad file and save the file with an REG extension. Make sure to add a blank line at the end of the file.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\
    {e17d4fc0-5564-11d1-83f2-00a0c90dc849}]
    @= "Search Results Folder "

Locate the file you just saved and double click it. Answer yes to the import prompt.

    Option 3: Apply this edit:

Search Shows Yellow Triangle with ! (Line 75)
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the VBS File: Download .vbs file and save it to your hard drive (you may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double-click the vbs file. You will be prompted when the script is done.

And if that doesn't work I would save yourself the trouble of trying any other remedy and do a repair install as I suggested earlier. This will guarantee the replacement of any missing or damaged files. There may be other missing or damaged files that you have not discovered yet, this repair install will take care of it all and will not touch any of your installed software or saved documents.

These instruction assume very little knowledge and show what the screen will show during the process.

If you don't have a disk, a borrowed one that matches your installed version of XP will work.

The repair install will return all windows settings to default and will replace the registry. It will not have an effect on any other software but it is always a wise precaution to back up all your personal files, pics, music, etc, just in case something goes wrong and you end up having to do a clean install which will wipe off everything.

In the link I gave there is a downloadable guide available, about halfway down the 1st page, print this out before you start so you can follow the steps.

Do not confuse 'Repair' with 'Recovery' they are completely different. Follow the instructions carefully one step at a time.

If you get stuck please shout. This process should be fairly straightforward if you just take your time and read every instruction.
