    Has anyone tried/used this newest version of AVG? I currently have AVG v9.0 and am satisfied with its performance. Would it be advisable to upgrade to this newest one?

    Thanks for any input!

    The newer version will have had some improvements made so I would say yes, get the upgrade.

    I just installed it the other day on a friend's comp. Seems faster and uses less resources than the previous version. However, when my clients want AVG I always do a custom install and DO NOT install Link Checker or the other bundled stuff, just the AV program and email scanner. The AVG Web stuff filters all Internet requests and slows things down considerably.

    Downloaded the new update for 2011, but while trying to install it refused to advance unless I uninstalled Microsoft Security Essentials, that was on the wifes laptop, intalled no problems on mine as I don't have MSE installed.

    Unwise to install 2 antivirus programs on any computer...99% of the time it will lead to problems.
    MSSE is actually an antivirus program, unlike antimalware programs like MalwareBytes or Superantispyware, which can be installed alongside antivirus programs with no issues.

    loonychoons Please open a New Thread in the future when addressing a specific problem that has nothing to do with discussing the software itself.

    Hi

    just after AVG2011 installs, it wants to do a full system scan

    the defaults settings for this are to "Automatically Heal / Remove" any threats which it finds

    now that could be a bit dodgy if AVG falsely identifies something non-malicious as a threat

    preferring to make my own decision about what constitutes a threat, I decided to postpone the full system scan, in order to uncheck that setting before the scan runs

    when "Automatically Heal / Remove" is disabled, at least you get prompted about what to do if AVG finds something. This gives you the chance simply to send the "threat" to quarantine in the Vault - which is a much safer bet if you want to avoid a possible disaster caused by a false positive.

    there are similar settings for the shell extension scan, resident shield, etc.

    one new component in AVG2011 is the "PC Analyser "; this performs the following four tasks:
    - prunes out "junk" from the registry;
    - prunes out "junk" files;
    - mends broken shortcuts;
    - defragments the HDD :(

    ummm.

    YMMV, but if I want to do those kinds of things, I'd much rather do them myself, at the time of my own choosing

    Unfortunately the "PC Analyser" cannot be left out of the installation; you get lumped with it.

    But at least you don't have to run it (unlike the first full scan which appears to be mandatory: can be postponed, but not omitted)

    HTH & best wishes, HJ.
