I have recently acquired a notebook and move it between my work and home.

However, when I go from one place to the other I am having to go into the system/computer name and change the workgroup to join the different networks. And that requires a reboot for the settings to take effect.

What must I do to get around that tedium each time I switch places?

    Thanks in advance,
    Rick

Can't you rename your home network to the same name as your work network?
For example, if your home network is called MSHOME and your work workgroup is called WORKGROUP then just keep your home network as WORKGROUP and rename all the computers on your home network as WORKGROUP.

That's where the settings for Alternate Configuration come into play.

Open Network and Sharing Center, click View status next to your connection, click the Properties button, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click the Properties button.

Select the Alternate Configuration tab and check User configured. Enter the details of your home connection there.

    Thanks for the feedback.

dnmcleod, I ran into a conflict of log-ins. In other words, the security settings (passcodes) have to be the same for that to work. The obvious get-around is for me to manually change the workgroup and reboot only when I will have to print something at home. But again that is a manual fix that is avoidable with the alternate configuration option.

Arie, I opened the TCP/IP properties and the alternate configuration option is there, but with work and all things being equal, I've not had the time to sit down and locate and record the various settings for the two networks to make the entries.

End the day -- it's okay to flag this one resolved as I've got the end in sight.

Thanks again to both of you.

    Rick
