This answer to this question may come close to counselling how to pirate licensed software....that's not my intent in asking the question but if the moderator of this forum feels it does, please say so as a way of ending the discussion.

I have a friend who purchased a Dell laptop with MS Works Suite 2000 pre-installed on his laptop, as well as receiving the actual program disks. He's now purchased a desktop for his wife and wonders if there's way to install the WS2000 program on this new computer. At the moment, when using the new desktop, he has to manually load the individual disks to be able to use all the functions in the program, and as there's 7 or 8 of them, its a pain.

Neither he, or I, are very computer literate.

If you have the original progam install disks, you should be able to use them to install the software on any machine that you choose. The legal aspects do not keep the software from installing or working properly. All you need is the key code and the disks. Stick the first disk in the drive bay and go to Add/Remove Software > Add new Programs > Install and let Windows find the disk. Complying with the EULA is your business and I'll not presume to instruct you there.

As Zephyr said the software will install on both computers if you have the install disks & the Product Key. Now if you are concerned with the legal issues or the ethics of this then you can also try an open source alternative I am currently using Open Office http://www.openoffice.org/ and it does what I need with out the pricetag (it's a free download about 51 MB in size). Be aware that Open Office will read & open files created in MS Works suite but MS Works suite WILL NOT open files created in Open Office (at least not for me) so it would probably be best to install it on both computers (that's what I did) so I could modify files on either PC. Just an idea the choice is up to you.

That isn't what's happening, however. I should have been more clear in my initial post. When attempting to install the program from the disks, and there are 8 disks, the installation program only calls for 3 disks (perhaps 4). At that point, it says the program is installed. However, many of the applications within the program are not included in that installation. The program recognizes this because if you want to use a part of the program which has not self-installed, it directs you to insert disk 5 or whatever. The result is that to use aspects of program requires to constantly manually install a program disk. The pre-installed version is all there and works without the disks, as it should.

Hopefully this makes my question more clear.

    Don't accept the default install!

Select custom, then make sure to hit the pulldown menu on all selections and choose "run all from my computer "!

Thanks Mike....I'll pass your directions on to my friend. When I hear back from him, I'll let you know if it worked.

I'm sorry I didn't understand you. I thought that you wanted to know if you could install it didn't know that you had tried. Let us know how it goes.
