    Hello!
Love the info available on this forum!..good Stuff!
I was able to resolve a few minor issues with some of the existing posts.
I do have one that I dont see anywhere...
I just got a new pc..Dell 8100..It has Windows 7. I have a game that I play that ran great with win xp. It also runs great with win 7. however...some of the .wav files in the game will not play ( i should say I cant hear them, apparently they are playing, but silent). in game or when I specifically go to the file and click it. The media player plays the file but there is no sound.
The specific problem is this..its a racing game...and it has several views you can select. The sound only plays in cockpit view. it has about 3 other external views while driving and those are the files that do not play. Again, these files worked and played just fine in win xp. I did notice that the ones that are not playing are 352 kbps size...and the ones that are playing are 705 kbps size..that is the only diffference I can see in the files.
There are 20 or more of these files in the sound pack...and all the 705's play and the 352's do not..can it be something to do with the old xp being 32bit and win 7 being 64bit. Has anyone had any problem with wav files like this?

    Thanks for any input!
    jim

Hey!..Thanks Mark...Yes I have tried to download the compatibility mode...it says I am not eligible because I have the "Home edition ".

i just found where I can upgrade to the pro version and then be able to get the virtual xp download...$90 to upgrade. Does this virtual xp run in 32bit?..Is that the whole oint of having it as an option?
Just want to make sure before I pony up the additional bucks. Because if programs arent running in 32 bit on xp..it still wont work.

OK, the only other suggestion I can make is to create a dual boot with windows XP if you have room on your hard drive.

Actually I dont have a disc..it came on my last pc...so I guess I would have to buy the xp edition...its probably more than the upgrade.

first, right click on each file and then the properties. try to determine between
the files that work and the files that dont work..

there are free programs that will convert the non working files to the same
format as those that do work.

    that might fix the problem.....

Hello Savage...Thanks for your reply...actually I have found that the files themselves are ok...they all play. My problem is I run a game that some of the sounds dont play properly in the game...for instance..I hear engine sound in only 1 of 4 different views.
I have been messing around with the Realtek HD audio manager and have managed to get the files to play with headphones on but not through my speakers...I know its wierd...I think I just have to find someone that is familier with configuing the audio manager and I will be ok.
All these files and the game worked properly with windows xp in both headphones and my speakers...but since I switched to Win pro 7 I have had this problem.
I have since loaded virtual windows xp so I would be running the game in the same mode as before..but that didnt fix it either.
    Thanks,
    jim

If your headphones are receiving the sound output there must be a physical problem that is stopping the sound getting through to your speakers.

yeah...I hear ya Mark..i'm guessing so too.. but I cant seem to figure out whats causing it. I have tried all sorts of configurations in my Audio manager but to no avail.
I also notice that..(I accidentally unplugged the mic and headphone one time when it got caught on my foot getting up). When the mic gets unplugged ..no speaker sound or headphone sound of course...and to furthur worsen the deal...I get no sound when I plug them back in..until I shut the game down and restart the game. Doh!

Can you just confirm one thing for me, when you play a DVD or CD is the sound OK with and without headphones?

Absolutely...working just fine...I even unplugged the headphones and back again to make sure. When I plug in headphones the music stops on speakers..and when I unplug headphones it switches back to speakers.
Which is how I thought the game sounds should be working as well.

Thats good, in one respect, as it proves there is nothing wrong with your sound system.

The problem must just be with some incompatability with the sound files in you game. I have found many threads and guides relating to sounds problem when people have upgraded to windows 7 but no conclusive answers that directly relate to this problem. Fixes have ranged from deleting and then reinstalling the sound device and drivers to downloading a codecs pack.

All I can suggest is that you contact the game manufacturer, they say the game is compatible with windows 7 but clearly there are issues that the manufacturer has yet to resolve. Have you any friends using windows 7 that would allow you to try and run the game on their computer to see if the problem still occurs. This may at least indicate if it is just your computers settings or some other refinement that your computer lacks that is the causing the issue.

Please get back here and let us know how you get on.

I will let you know for sure..Thanks for all your help.

The game I am running is from 2003...soooo probably has lots of compatibility problems, however, I do have several friends running the same game and dont have any issues with win 7.
I am going to check in to the codec and driver deal as well.
