Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

The link has a nifty new: To fix this problem automatically, click the Fix this problem link. Then, click Run in the File Download dialog box and follow the steps in this wizard.

A dead cd drive would make more sense then a virus.

The S drive is probably the system wide restore partition. It holds the operating system to be used to re-set it back to factory settings.

Does the cd drive pop out? If so, try popping it out and back in. (with the pc turned OFF)

the cd tray does pop out and you hear a whirring noise like when they are working fine. as for popping it out and in when switched off are you wanting me to open the tray then switch off and close it.
    thank you for the help.

Have a look in the system bios and see if the CD drive is listed there. If it isn't it is most likely dead or has a bad connection, try removing it (in this case) and refit.

As there is another fault with system restore this might be a virus but could also be early signs of hard drive failure. If you can find the make and model number of the hard drive it may be worth running hard drive diagnostics which you can download from the manufacturers site.

The first task I would undertake is to back up any important files to an external device just incase the hard drive fails.

The S drive will be a partition on the hard drive for the system restore.

Glad to here the CD drive has recovered but what about the problem of the system restore not completing, do you need some more help with that?

A virus could be a possible cause of this. Download and run this just to be sure, do a scan that includes all drives.

    http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/support.aspx?mkt=en-us

Another possibility is errors on the hard drive so after the virus scan run chkdsk as follows:

    1. Press Start > type cmd in the search box and enter. At that c: prompt, type chkdsk /r and press enter.

2.Check disk will start to run but then it will say:

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

Type Y for yes, and press enter. Then reboot the computer into normal mode. Chkdsk will start when Windows begins loading again. Let all 5 phases run and don't use or turn off the computer. (The chkdsk process may take an hour or more to finish.)

3.Chkdsk finds any corrupted files that are causing the problem and fixes them. Read the results of each phase as it finishes. During the final phase, it will notify you if it finds any corrupted files.

4.When the Check Disk is done, it will finish loading Windows.

    Let us know what happens.
