The infrared port on a Dell Inspiron 8100 I have doesn't seem to work with WinXP.

It doesn't turn up in Device Manager and on the Dell Support site it only shows a driver version till Windows 2000.

It should work with XP just fine. Is the port on in the BIOS?

I got Windows XP to detect the IR port. It's now listed there in Device Manager.

How do I use it? I've got a mobile phone with an IR port and I'd like to send some files via IR to my phone.

I have a Nokia 8210 and it was automatically recognised by the laptop once I activated the infra red on the phone and put it within range of the laptop's port.

You need to set up a dun connection using the 'phone as a modem.
