    Hi all,

I recently contacted MS support because a "bug" (which broni helped me fix) messed up my AutoPlay in WMP10. Thanks to other posters I was able to run the MS Autorun Fix Tool, and it took care of most of the problems I was having.

OK, that's the history. Now, the MS tech took a snap-shot of my registry, etc., (because he couldn't totally fix my WMP10 problems) and when he called today he told me the "team" had found, like, a thousand missing, corrupted, bad .dlls.

What the . . .? If I had even half that amount of .dll errors, my computer just wouldn't run. The only .dll errors I ever get are on certain web pages using SeaMonkey.

I ran CCleaner and the complete total of "Missing-Shared DLLs is like 20. and all the other CCleaner checks I ran showed a total of maybe 50 inconsistencies. And, as I'm not experiencing any problems, (I bootup in under a minute and shutdown is a flat 8 seconds) I really fail to see how I could have that many bad .dlls and still be able to run?

Even running SystemFileChecker didn't "replace" anything — all was as it was supposed to be.

So, how could I have that many bad .dlls and does anyone know of a free dll checker that would tell me if my dlls are, indeed, bad\corrupted?

Did the MS tech sent you names of thousands of bad/missing/corrupt dll's ? My guess is no. I don't have any idea what tools they are using but I don't see how using just registry snap shot one could guess which dll is corrupt/missing unless he has the list of all dll's installed on the computer along with other info.

    Just forget about it.

If you are facing so many problems, I would recommend that you install Windows again rather than try to salvage an already bad situation which could turn worse any moment.

Shared DLL's typically aren't Windows system files, although some of them will be from Microsoft such as .NET framework files.
The Shared DLL Key in the registry is meant to store the location of Dll's that might be needed by other installed programs. However, some programmers have decided to use that Key in the registry to store the locations of all files installed by some programs. For example, Kodak's Easyshare program uses the Key to store the location of graphic files used by the Stationary option. Graphic files are not DLL's, but they are listed there.
You may have uninstalled a program that deleted the files, but left the entries for them in the Key. Some installers put entries in the Key for files that aren't actually installed (.Net Framework 2 will put entries for files for .Net Framework 1.1).
CCleaner seems to be listing entries for files that just aren't there.
Your system seems to be running fine, seems to be no worries to me.

    Hi rsinfo,
That's just it "” the only "problem" is that WMP10 doesn't list the Artist\Album Title nor the names of the songs, and when I insert an installation disk, it doesn't autorun; it just opens in Folder View.

It seems to me that this annoyance doesn't warrant a format and reinstall.

Hi jpChris. Just some thoughts, if your only issue at this point is WMP 10 not listing the names of songs and the artist/album titles have you thought about upgrading to Windows Media Player 11 and Service Pack 3?

If you are having other issues with your system then running chkdsk /r from the recovery console wouldn't hurt either.

I'd agree with Evan here. I'm not convinced your MP3 tags are an issue with software (how were they created)?

However, I'm also not entirely sure by what you mean with "with what I need from SP3 ". How do you know what you need and what's stopping you from going all the way?

Do other players (eg WinAmp) show the same issues? If so it would suggest a problem with your files rather than the software.

    @ Evan,

I have a clone "breakme" drive and WMP11 has the same issues. And, yes, my other Player is RealPlayer and it doesn't show the stuff either. All my CDs are store-bought, legit, and they used to display properly. I've run chkdsk, defrag, SFC and a few other things and they all show no problems.

    @wildfire,

    The CDs are .cda.
I've gone through the Windows Update and selected the Security\Hot Fixes I need. I checked SP3 and there's, like, a terabyte of stuff that just does not apply to me and the way I use my computer and what I use it for. I really don't see the necessity of downloading a bunch of stuff for stuff I have no use for. So, that's what I mean by "SP3 in all but name only ". I can't see bloating my system just because Uncle Bill wants me to.

    @ markp62,

I know about shared dlls, and that's what CCleaner is showing: files that go nowhere and have no association. However, the .NET Framework I installed was the 3.5 Bootstrapper version, which is about 1\3 the size of 3.5 full (strictly to play an extremely old DOS Strip Poker game) and I noticed in Add\Remove Programs there's listings for .NET 1, 2, 3 and 3.5.

Even so, though, how could there possibly be that many dll errors and the only issue is song titles?

I think I'll ask the MS tech to e-mail me a few hundred bad dlls and check them.

¿Maybe it's a DRM issue? All my other .wmv, .flv, etc., files show properly — it's just .cda.

I'd still like to know if there's such and animal as a DLL Checker.

That's because you would have been either told to disable autorun in Malware forum or installed a patch from Microsoft that does it. That's standard as it blocks viruses from USB. You could re-enable it if you wish.

    More info here.

What's the error you are getting or it just shows blank ?

Check if you have given permission to WMP to access net in your firewall.

    Hi rs,

Yes, autorun had been disabled, but I ran the MS AutoRun Fix and now I can play the CDs and DVD automatically. I've tried the MS fix you mentioned, but it didn't help with install disks.

No, there's no "error ", it just says "Unknown Artist\Album" and Track1_____ 7:38. And when I click album info, it connects to the web and all the album info shows.

Where do I set the Firewall Settings?

I would leave the install disks alone as I like to see what they contain before doing anything with them. Any way it just takes a couple of clicks to find autorun.inf, view it & run the installer manually.

Unfortunately, there's no autorun.inf on music CDs.

I did find under Exceptions in Firewall wmplayer.exe.

Should I uncheck that? Or, maybe deleting the "NoDriveTypeAutoRun registry entry?

    Its only for data/program discs.

Its already allowed. Unchecking it would block it. You could uncheck it, save, reboot & then try to run WMP. It works sometimes.

    Hi all,

I completely forgot about this thread because I was off on another quest. PeteC reminded me about this, so, here's the "close" (which I thimk I partially posted to another thread):

As far as WMP: I uninstalled; rebooted; re-installed — no joy. So, I did it again and this time it "took." So, my WMP issue is solved.

As far as 1,000 .dll errors, Microsoft couldn't supply me with any instances, as RS suggested.

So, I'll mark this as Resolved; even though I'm still scratching my head wondering if there's such a thing as a .DLL Checker.

Unless you are getting actual error messages relating to certain dll files not being found, then I wouldn't worry about it. Since you already ran SFC and everything checked out ok then your system is probably in good health.

Regarding your WMP issue its great that you were able to get that problem resolved as well.

I second Evan. Don't worry about it.
