    Hi all,

Windows Media Player 10 has stopped auto playing when I put in a music CD (or any CD\DVD). Also, it used to display the track number, title and length of the songs on the disk, now it only shows the track and time.

I've tried clicking My Computer and right clicking on the drive (F:) and checking Auto Play but it doesn't do anything. I've also tried TweakUI and it didn't help either.

So, how do I get Auto Play back and display the song titles? These are legit store bought CDs and DVDs.

A quick fix might be to uninstall Media Player and then download and reinstall it.

    Hi Mark,

    No joy.

However, while in the Registry I found in: HKLM\System\CurContSet\Services\CDROM "AutoRunAlwaysDisable" has next to "Reg-Multi-Sz"
    NEC MBR-7
    NEC MBR-7.4
    PIONEER CHANGR DRM-1804X
    PIONEER CD-ROM DRM-6324X
    PIONEER CD-ROM DRM-624X
    TORiSAN CD-ROM CDR_C36

I don't have the Pioneer DVD anymore.

Would it be safe to delete this, or, Modify and change it to "0 "?

Back up your registry first then you could experiment but perhaps another member would like to advise you, I'm not to hot on registry editing.

On the other hand if you still have the old pioneer driver installed your could remove it and update with your new DVD drivers.

Just looked for another solution and found this from a microsoft article. It confirms that a cause for the problem can be the drivers and a couple of other things.

I read the article and have already searched the registry. The only change was changing the "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" to 91 (it was 143???).

Still no joy. I'm still thinking that Post 3 might be the culprit, but I don't want to do anything without someone to confirm it. Also, I had Pioneer software for burning at one time, but, that was a long time ago.

I never had Roxio; only Nero Express and I got completely rid of it everywhere. I'm wondering if it might be one of the Microsoft Updates that's causing the problem?

I really want\need AutoRun to work.

Really? Your "AutoRunAlwaysDisable" shows the same thing??? WOW!

Anyway, AutoRun is and has always been 1.

I've seen in another thread that someone cured this problem (having tried several other solutions that failed) using a registry cleaner. I you don't have one try CCleaner which is freeware.

    http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

If this is no good then I would suggest you try a repair install of XP which should put your registry back to default settings. If that fails then maybe there is something wrong with your player, do you regularly run a cleaner through it? the lens may be dirty.

There is a fix tool available for this problem (it doesn't work for every situation) I'll try to find it.

    There are two fixes here:

    http://www.s2services.com/autoplay.htm

And this is the one from microsoft.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817357/en-us

Make sure you back up your registry before using these.

    Hi Mark,

I already have CCleaner. I have very, very few listings of extraneous "stuff ". If there's something specific I need to clean, do you know what it is?

The first link doesn't apply to me; and the second link to MS doesn't have the Hot Fix available in English!

This is getting to be very frustrating. It seems like it should be a simple thing to fix "” but it's really vexing me.

    Update

After much The Googling around, I found the MS Auto Repair Wizard for WMP. I ran it and now AutoRun almost works again. The weird thing is that in the log "NoDriveAutorun" was fixed (the only problem the Wiz detected) was changed to something completely different than everything else I read.

When I put in a CD, it now Auto Plays in WMP (like it used to) and a DVD will give me the option of what I want to use to play it "” again, like it used to be.

However, the Artist and song titles still don't show: Only the Track Number and Length of the songs shows.

So, I'm almost there. Is there some setting in WMP to show the Artist and Song Titles in the Now Playing List?

p.s. When I clicked on the link to this post in my e-mail, the Display of WBBS was all wonky. My immediate thought was "Oh, jeez! What now???" Then after closing down and coming back, I saw Arie's message that he's aware of the problem. Hooray!!! :D I don't have to adjust my meds!!!

Yup BBS went a bit strange for a while, made me panic a bit:D

    I just found this fix.

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...b6-e8fa-45c4-a171-1b389cfacdad&displaylang=en

Not sure if that will do much more than you have already achieved.

Strange that other link I gave was not available in english:confused: I clicked the spanish one but the email came with a long list of instructions in english, how was anyone spanish supposd to understand that:confused:

Anyway, I'll see if I can find anything else, but rapidly running out of solutions.

I already did the first link you posted (Post #13) and got AutoPlay to almost work properly. CDs & DVDs behave properly now: Except Program Installation disks don't auto run, I get a window with a list of files on the disk instead of the Welcome\Setup screen.

OK, where's "Organize "? I read the link you posted and now I'm even more confused than when I started. It says to "click the Wizard ", but there's no Wizard to click anywhere. Everything I click on always says "Unknown Artist" or "Unknown Track ".

    Update

I just spent the better part of two hours with a MS tech (he used Remote Desktop) checking, unchecking re-checking, un-re-checking, enabling, disabling, re-enabling, un-re-enabling, a few reboots and . . .

    Still no joy.

He finally downloaded my registry and some other stuff and he's going to call me back tomorrow after he analyzes the info.

He was a really nice guy, good sense of humor, but, seriously "” all this brain damage just to get Installation Disks to autorun and the Artist\Titles to show up in WMP?

Oh, well, if anyone knows a quickie, please let me know. If not, I'll post back tomorrow with the results.

I hope that all works out for you, it will be interesting to find out what the problem is.

'Organise' is in the top left hand corner as you open Media Player. Sorry, not sure where the Wizard is, haven't had time to read through it all.

    Update Part 2

    Hi Mark,

    I think "Organize" is WMP11 or 12 "” I can't find it in WMP10.

Anyway, MS tech called me and said that he'd found almost 1,000 .DLL errors, or corrupted .DLLs.

What the . . .? If I had even half that amount of .dll errors, my computer just wouldn't run. The only .dll errors I ever get are on certain web pages and SeaMonkey.

I reran CCleaner and the complete total of "Missing-Shared DLLs is like 20. and all the other CCleaner checks I ran showed a total of maybe 50 inconsistencies. And, as I'm not experiencing any problems, I bootup in under a minute and shutdown is a flat 8 seconds, I really fail to see how I could have that many bad .dlls and still be able to run?

Maybe I should start a new thread. Actually, I should because this isn't related to my original problem.

You could start a new thread for the .DLL errors but this one is not yet resolved is it?

With that much damage I think you may have a virus or malware (that is if the scan by MS is correct:confused:)

It may be worth a visit to the Virus and Malware forum, just to be on the safe side.

The 'Oranize' menu must be another version to 10, if you can't see it. I got that from my version which probably is 12. Have you tried reinstalling with the latest version?
