hi. thanx to the members who helped on my 2 previous probs...solved!

my new one is this: my girlfriends son recieved a compaq from father. was running bad after mishap with his dog. i reinstalled win98se with new disk, couldnt find his. loaded fine but were missing modem, graphics, and sound drivers. i found ones for graphics & modem. but cant get sound to work. looked up particular compaq on hewlettpackard site, this model came equipped with three different sound cards built in to mb. i have tried two drivers so far(from compaq) but no luck. as we speak i am downing third. after i installed ess solo sound driver it loaded and put a volume icon on taskbar. it showed up in properties of multimedia...preferred devices and in system properties. i ran direct x and followed its troubleshooting direcs.it said i was missing the following files>ndiswmi.sys, ndis2sup.vxd, ndis.vxd, svrapi.dll, secur32.dll, ccw32.vxd, sndrec.exe, soundrec.cnt. i installed all of these. still nothing. when i ran dict x it said failure to create sound because these files- mcicda.drv, mciseq.drv, mciwave.drv- are missing. but they arent.

should i just skip the headache and purchase new sound card. or is it something simple ive overlooked? thanx again.

I have a short, very short, attention span. I'd buy a sound card (they are almost dirt cheap and likely will outperform whatever is on the Compaq mobo.) I would be beginning to think it was like I was trying to wipe my a** with a wheel, there's no end to it.

    Try this thread

Look down the page for links to ess audio drivers. I think they saud that the win98 drivers would not work but the win95 did.
