I recently purchased a new Advent laptop running Windows 7 home premium. It had a 90 day trial pre-installed for Bullguard anti-virus, which works very well so far. It has been catching a port scan from IP address 84.53.132.40 on an almost daily basis, which I have traced to a company called Akamai Technologies, a web security outfit in Europe. I have seen an expired thread on this forum concerning the same company, and wondered why they should engage in this practice. Bullguard has been very effective at catching and blocking these attacks, but I just wonder what their purpose is. Does anyone else know why a supposedly reputable firm would want to hack a private citizen in a foreign country? I have no great knowledge of hacking but this has now got me very interested in the subject (within the bounds of legality of course.)
I would be interested to hear from others with similar experiences.

    What's your evidence of a port-scan?

I suggest you read up on what Akamai actually is: http://www.akamai.com/index.html

Since you are located in the UK, it is quite likely that you get content delivered from the European Akamai... could even be virus definition updates from Bullguard...

My 'evidence of a port scan' is an almost daily report from Bullguard, detailing the list of ports scanned and the action taken i.e. blocking the site for 300 seconds. Yes, I have investigated Akamai, and have also contacted their support department by email on 5 occasions, without receiving a single reply. As for them sending Bullguard updates, I don't believe that for a second. Why would they even bother to send content to an application that they must KNOW will block them? Your reply does not stand up I am afraid, and I will be seeking an answer from someone who has a bit more common sense and a lot less superior attitude in future.
    Thanks for nothing fella.

I agree with Arie, they are a major content providor.
Used by all of the top 5 anti-virus companies to distribute software online.
The above italized line is from this link
Your firewall is blocking what is known as "internet noise ". We all get it, and what's the worry? Your firewall is blocking it anyway.

Without knowing which ports there's not much to say...

I wouldn't expect you to get any reply from them.

As pointed out by Mark's link above, they do distribute software from 5 of the top 6 AV vendors. No idea if Bullgard is in the top 6.

Yea, I get that sometimes... you'll learn to live with it ;)

Here's another link you could have found on their site: http://wwwfp.akamai.com/html/support/faq.html
