Whatever works, but it looks to me like your hard drive may be on its way out.

Hard drive on it's way out

That's what I was afraid of.
I have an external HDD (Iomega 1TB) with back up attached and an Ipod that is still connected. So far nothing has indicated any problems with them.
If I just unplug them without 'disconnecting' or 'safely removing' do you think I'll be damaging them?

No, as long they're not active (in process of copying some file, or such).

How do I resolve my network after PC dies?

Thank you for all the support. Now, all I need to do is switch my laptop over to use my internet without the PC. Is that possible. I have a bluetooth HP photosmart c6180 printer and a hp pavilion laptop right now everything works and I'm communicating with you through the laptop.

Once I disconnect the PC how do I hook up the "network" - is that what it still is?

Disconnecting desktop should affect your laptop connectivity.

Thanks for all the help, guess I have to start from scratch with a new set up and give up the ghost on the PC.
Glad you were here as a resource.
You may close my posting, if I have any other inquiries I'm sure they'll fall under set-up after I'm ready to make a change.
