I just installed two matched 1/2 gig memory modules in a Dell Inspiron E1405. But when I do a Help / about windows from the computer, it is only recognizing 0.5 gig.

Up until this change, this computer only had a single 0.5 gig module in it, which I have taken out. The two modules I just put in it were ones that were taken out of another newer Dell Inspiron E1405. That computer was running Vista, and I took out its 2x0.5 modules and replaced them with a 2 gig module. That computer immediately recognized the upgrade.

Is there something I need to do with XP media edition on this older laptop to get it to recognize both chips? I thought it would be automatic like the newer laptop.

As far as I know it should be automatic.

Pull out the RAM sticks and refit them.
Go into Setup and make sure it's recognized in the BIOS settings.

Are you sure they are compatible with your system. You can also go to http://www.crucial.com/index.aspx and scan your computer for your particular RAM specs.

If you are still having the same problem, go and get some CO CRC Contact Cleaner Code 2016, spray the RAM Module slots top to bottom and the spray both sides of the RAM and put them into the slots. Let dry completely, then boot up.

    Problem fixed.

I reseated one of the chips, and it fixed the problem. It is seeing the full 1 gig now.

    Thanks for your help.
