    For a AMD 350 Mhz running Windows 98 SE how much Ram would be optimum ? I was told that 128 Mb was good and that
    256Mb or more would actually slow the machine down. Is this
    an accurate judgement. It always seems that the more Ram the
    better. Any comments ?

    Just what do you do when you use your PC. If you have a lot of programs open at one time or run programs like photoshop you will need more memory than if you just surf the web and email.

    128MB Ram is fairly enough for surfing the web and using common Microsoft Applications. However, today the RAM is relatively cheap, therefore if your budget isn't tight, it would not be a bad idea to upgrade to 128MB RAM because as you said in your thread the more the better.

    Something to keep in mind is the limits of the mother board. You should have no problem running 128 meg or even 256 meg and you may or may not see any difference between the two.

    The limits on WIN98 is, I believe, 512 meg.

    I don't think the processor speed has any bearing on memory limits.

    Lots of memory available with win95/98 causes the vcache size to be huge which can severely reduce performance on big memory using programs such as database engines. Initially, I found that a 128 mb ram size was considerably faster than the same machine with a 256 mb ram size while running FoxPro. A little research showed why.

    A bit confusing but check this out-->

    http://www.windows-help.net/windows98/tune-34.shtml

    The important piece is to install limits for the vcache:

    Open System.ini (select Start > Run and in the Open: box type sysedit)
    Add the following two lines to the [vcache] section (add the section if it's not there):

    MinFileCache=1024
    MaxFileCache=8192

    I set my MaxFileCache at 16384 and it made all the diference in the world for my operations.

    Good Luck!
