    Outlook Express 6

When I receive e-mails the cursor bar is on the last e-mail received and that e-mail will open automatically. Is there a way to configure Outlook to wait until I click on an e-mail before it opens?

    Thanks

    mopar.

    mopar,

Do this, open OE and click VIEW > LAYOUT and untag the box for "Show Preview pane ". Ok out and you should be good to go.

You'll have to double click any message you want to open, old or new.

    Thanks Zephyr

This almost works the way I want it. I'm working on 2 computers and one has the "Show Preview pane" checked and when I recieve e-mail I have nothing showing in my preview pane until I click on it and it is highlighted then it shows up down in the preview pane where I can then read it.

    Thanks again

    mopar

You're welcome. I thought you might like that. It gives you the full screen for viewing the old messages without being constrained by the Preview screen. I kinda prefer it but I'm sure it a matter of personal choice.

    Cheers.

Tools = Options - General - uncheck "When starting, go directly ... etc ". Maybe?

Thanks for your suggestion, but not what I'm looking for.

Oh, OK, I see better now, both eyes are open. Open OE, Go to TOOLS > OPTIONS > READ > and untag the box "Automatically download messages when viewing in Preview pane ".

I think you have the setting all correct but something is wrong with the system files. Somehow it isn't obeying. Perhaps a repair of OE or an install over the existing. I know nuttin' else.

    We welcome other opinions????

As I understand what you want, when you open OE it automatically checks for new mail and when it's done receiving the last message is highlighted and therefore open in the preview pane and what you want is for none of the messages to be highlighted until you select one.

Unfortunately, this is probably hard coded in the program. I could be wrong (I often am :D ) and there may be a registry hack for this, but I don't know of any.

I have noticed that if I click a blank area future incoming messages aren't automatically selected, but nothing I've ever come across stops it from selecting a message when you first open OE. :(

You hit the nail on the head.

I have never seen OE do this before. Mine started doing it by it self about 6 months ago. My friend seen it and ask how to set his OE up like this. I have looked all over the setup of OE and have found nothing.

Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions.
