Here is the CPU support for the GA-G31M-ES2C (Is this it and check the REV number?)
    http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/cpu-support-popup.aspx?pid=2961
Toward the bottom there several P4's listed with a 533 FSB (Front side Bus). Make sure you have identified the CPU correctly.

Did you get the identification information off the CPU before you installed it?

Here are the Intel CPU Identification utilities
    http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/highlights/processors/toolspiu
Use the bootable version. Unfortunately, Gigabyte might not use exactly the same identification system as Intel.

If it goes to the BIOS, the CPU is probably compatible, BUT, your caution is good. It might possibly say, require a BIOS upgrade to make it work correctly.

If it recognizes it and works doubt it'd damage the board.
    JMO

Of course, for $28 or less, on eBay, can get a 3.2GHz / 800 FSB.

You might try to identify it further. There are lots of processors like that.

It is 533MHZ Front Side Bus? How much L2 Cache?

    Intel's list
    http://ark.intel.com/ProductCollection.aspx?familyID=581&MarketSegment=DT

This is a Processor Number 520, but 533 FSB, not 800 FSB in Gigabyte's list
    http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=27445&processor=520&spec-codes=SL7J4,SL7KH

It appears it will work, but it might not work correctly. Intel have drivers that do things like control the fan speed, so the CPU or maybe the chipset processors might start overheating.

If it not on the list, you will have to decide for yourself. I agree with ephemarial, it probably won't damage the m/b, but I wouldn't stake my life on it.

511 is not in the list.

There might be reasons, for example, that it is not popular model, so they didn't want to spend time testing it. It might not have the correct "Advanced Technologies ". The 511 are 64bit, check if similar models in the list are 32bit.

As I said, you will need to decide yourself. It might not cause damage, but it might not work correctly either. If it does not show up in the BIOS when it is supposed to, for me, that would be one way it is not working correctly.
