I was told by a competent tech that W7 had a mode to accommodate XP software.

    If so:
Does that allow me to operate present software under W7 that works for XP?
Does it allow me time to upgrade or replace software and hardware working under XP/2000?
    What flexibility does it permit?

Windows 7 Pro and above will run XP Mode - it is a separate download from MS and includes a copy of XP Pro (free :))

The majority of software which runs under XP will run under Windows 7 and much older software too. I have 15 yr old + software such as Wordperfect and Lotus Organiser running happily on 7 Pro x64.

Windows XP mode runs XP in a virtual machine and was introduced mainly for corporations with bespoke software designed for XP. However any software which ran in XP will run in XP mode, but there is little point in doing that if the software will run in 7.

I have an app - Quicken 2000 which will not install on 7 x64 and does not run right on 7 x32. In both cases it runs perfectly in XP Mode.

As XP Mode runs in a virtual machine it uses virtual hardware - a virtual SIS graphics card for example, but it can be set to see and access all hard drives in the computer and an optical drive. By default it is assigned 512 Mb RAM.

For a list of apps compatible with Windows 7 see.....

You da man, Pete C. We must have purchased the same software, almost exactly my library.

Been through the compatibility list, but not one for IT Pros. I appreciate improvements in media delivery, system stability, and access to new services. I do not like having to upgrade everything in order to do that. Software costs are too high and cost more than hardware.

Would love to have virtual hardware installed as some of software is quite antiquated. I now have W2000 OS and love its stability. Nearly same architecture as 95 & 98, which I understood.

Thanks. I can now move into the new century with confidence.
