hi haveing problems with windows and internet explorer. the problem is that it seems to freeze every so often i can still work some of the programmes but the internet page won't close or minimise and if on the desktop none of the programmes there will start. i can get them to start through the start button and then programmes. i have also noticed doing it on my fathers laptop which is windows 7.
if you go and shutdown then restart you start up fine with no error messages.

Start IE without Add-ons: type iexplore.exe -extoff in Start > Run. Does that solve the problem?

i have just done as you asked i will not be able to tell if it has worked.
the problem is not there all the time it just seems to run fine for ages and then when you go to minimise or close the page stays there.
    thank you for the reply.

sorry forgot as have been away on holiday. i have ran it on the add ons off but my laptop has frozen a couple of times since then. the problem is that it runs fine then when you go to close or minimise the page it stays fully open or if you are on the desktop it will not open any of the programmes but you can if you go start-> programs. it is a bit of a pain but once you restart she is fine.
once again sorry for not replying sooner and thank you for your help.

no it is not the same computer as mentioned in that thread.
the problem on this laptop with things freezing. i thought it was just my laptop doing it but i have also found my fathers laptop does it too and he is on windows 7. so wondering if had has to do with a windows update more than the internet. as of last thred i have just noticed that other people in the house are opening the internet with the add ons enabled so not getting a proper run with it disabled.
    thank you for the reply.

i have 1.99gb of ram if that is the problem is there a way of fixing it. the computer can run for a couple of days before it happens and you can't open my documents in the start menu but you can start anything in the programme section. it has just done it with the add ons disabled.
    thank you for the reply

Thinking on this a little overnight ....

    2 computers, different OS's same problem ....

Very unlikely to be an update as the OS's and therefore the updates will be different plus the cores of XP and 7 are very much different.

This leaves us with something which is common to both machines, maybe a shell extension in Windows Explorer.

Download ShellExView and disable all third party (non Microsoft) shell extensions and test. If the issue is resolved re-enable one at a time until the issue returns - you then know the source.

    How about 8 core ? [IE8 = 8] :D

I have been running IE8 on WinXP, Vista & Win 7 on AMD Athlon, Athlon XP+, Athlon II, Sempron without any problem & most of these are not even dual core.

RAM has a direct effect on any program leave alone IE8. No.of cores hardly matter unless the program is multi threaded & can utilise a no.of cores.

The problem could also be related to hard disk or rather the state of hard disk. It could be badly fragmented or have errors.

Suggest that you run chkdsk /f on all partitions of hard disk, delete temp files/IE cache, turn off indexing & defrag it.

    -------------------

How much cache do you have in Internet Explorer. If you are connected through broadband connection, 8 -10 MB should be sufficient.

For temp/IE files cleaning, run CCleaner.
