Resolved Search For Efficient Anti-Virus

I am running XP on a Dell that came with Trend Pccillian. It worked OK until the subscription ran out. I tried MS Security Essentials that was also OK until it was updated and then it paralyzed the computer for 10 min after startup by churning the hard drive continuously. I tried AVG, but it slowed down everything all the time. Any ideas for a low cost alternative?

 

Try Avast. I have been using for last 3 years after AVG became a bloat. Very good.

 

I installed Avast with no adverse effects so far. Is there a way to schedule scans other than at boot? What happens when the registration expires in a year?

 

Till now I haven't faced the need to schedule scan as it scans in real time while saving & opening files. You can scan manually if you wish.
