well my outlook express 6 is on the fritz, i just installed the latest service patch last night and this morning was acting a little weird and this afternoon it won't open at all, it starts to open and then it just sits there, now i ctrl alt del and see it has stopped responding,

how can i save my email's and address book that should be there so that i can then uninstall and resinstall... do i just save the contents of the OE folder in program files? remember i can't get the **** thing open...

    Hi Tuskawilla,
I hope it isn't something to do with a certain message since importing will bring back the problem. Not likely to be that.

Since you can't make the grade to opening the OE program, you can resort to dos commands to copy the mailbox files to a safe spot. Actually they would probably be safe right where they are since an over-install wouldn't affect them.

Even so, it's best to be super safe so here's the drill..

Open a DOS box in Windows and from the c: prompt type:

    dir /s *.dbx [enter]

Now take note of the path to those files. There should be at least 8 of them, more if you have created any sub-directories for personal use.

    Then type the following command:

xcopy (enter path found earlier)*.* c:\mymail\

That does it for the messages. For the address book:

    dir /s *.wab [enter]

and use the same approach as above.

You'll not likely need either of these but best to be sure.

thanks for all the help, i found where my email was stored and also exported my address book. i ended up deleting my identity key, and opening outlook express, creating a new idenity and then importing my files in. everything seems great now!

thanks again all, that's why this is a great site!
