Ok fellas here we go...I put a bakup HD in my PC and loaded XP pro, no problems. I then ran a backup from my original XP pro and sent it to the New hd...What my intention was is to duplicate my original HD... So I went to the new hd and did a restore...And it restored but pgms did not work....What did I miss?...My 1st hd is partioned win98 1st then winxp....How could I easily ghost the XP Partition to the new HD....

Never had any problems with any other OSs but this one...

That has always been the drawback of using Windows Backup. It intentionally ignores the Registry in most cases. Given that, any program that relies on having support via some Registry entry will be left twisting in the wind. (ows)

I use Instant Recovery (Novastor) for imaging my drive for backup purposes. I also have Drive Image 2002 which does an equally fine job and is more user friendly. If I had to pick one, I'd go with Instant recovery since it's half the cost. ($35.95)

Either program will copy your drive bit by bit so it matters not what system you are copying. Anything Intel based is covered. I like that, since buying new software every time a new OS emerges isn't my idea of where my money should go.

Here's a thought, why not export the Registry on the initial drive and copy the resultant .reg file to the new drive. Then boot the new drive and run the .reg file to bring the Registry in line. Worth a shot I would think.
