Last week I was infected with mal ware and I posted on the correct forum and someone named broni from the BBS malware forum helped me remove the virus infections. My computer seems uninfected now. My browser seems to be working just fine and I have no complaints except that ever since the infections my computer started taking much longer to boot up. When I was infected it took about 28 minutes to boot up every time. Since my computer was cleansed of viruses it now takes 12 to 15 minutes to boot up. Broni believes that my computer is now virus free and that I might have other issues. I have run a check disk from the run command line and that did not resolve the issue. Any ideas? Should I use my Windows XP disk to replace certain folders and files? I hope I have posted to the correct forum and that you can help.

Hi albert1013. It looks like your computer needs a tune up especially since its taking a while for it to boot up.

Follow these steps to make the computer run faster:

    1. Click Start< Control Panel< Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any programs that you don't use.
    2. While in the add/remove programs window click the button that says add/remove windows components and uncheck the checkboxes next to Indexing Service, MSN Explorer, and Windows Messenger. Then click the Next button. When the wizard finishes click the finish button to close the window.
    3. Disable any Windows Services that you don't use by following Black Vipers Services Guide.
    4. Download and run ATF Cleaner and select all the checkboxes in the program then hit the empty selected button, http://majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html.
    5. Run Disk Cleanup, Start< All Programs< Accessories< Sytstem Tools< Disk Cleanup. When its done calculating how much free space you can save make sure you check all the checkboxes except for compress old files on the Disk Cleanup tab. Now click the More Options tab and under System Restore click the cleanup button. When it asks you if you want to delete all but the most recent restore point click Yes. Now click ok on the Disk Cleanup window to allow Disk Cleanup to remove unnecessary files from the computer.
    6. Download and run Auslogics Disk Defrag from here.
    7. Download and run Quicksys RegDefrag from here.
    8. Click Start< Right Click My Computer and click Properties. Click the advanced tab< Under performance hit settings< click advanced again and under virtual memory click change< Make sure your harddrive is selected and select the option that says system managed size and click the set button. Now Click ok on all the windows to close them out and reboot the computer.
    9. Also what security programs do you have installed and do you have Windows XP Service Pack 3 installed?

Let me know if your computer is any faster after performing the above steps.

Hi Evan Omo! I have Windows XP with sp3. I have Avast5 and Malwarebytes anti malware software. I should have mentioned that in my first post. Sorry. I will do all those things you listed ASAP.

If you would like to scan for corrupted files, first put your XP CD into the drive, and Cancel it when it autoruns.
Then go to Start\Run, type in sfc /scannow and press Enter. The system files will be scanned. When it ends, it will simply disappear except when it prompts you to reboot so it can replace a file. I reboot anyway as it does some cleanup after itself.

Thanks but I already re-installed Windows XP so the problem is gone. Thanks again!
