One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it.

USB Root Hub: Unused USB port, Unused USB port, Unused USB port, Unused USB port, Unused USB port AND Unknown Device.

Recommendation: Try reconnecting the device. If Windows still does not recognize it, replace the device.

*Here's the point. I've tried reconnecting several times (it's a new camera that installs software on the computer). My wife has had no issues with this on her computer but I've had the above. Any ideas?

Have you tried another USB port, preferably on the 'other side' of the computer, i.e. if you used a front port try a back port or vice versa.

If that does not resolve the issue the standard procedure in fixing USB fault is first to Delete all USB controllers and Root Hubs through Device Manager and reboot - Windows will reinstall them.

Are both you and your wife using the same OS?

    Hi Pete.

Yes, we're both using Win7 and we both have computers that are only two years old. It's really been a mystery that this would ***** up my computer and not hers. I tried other ports, tried uninstaling and reinstalling, tried reconnecting the device. Eventually I downloaded Revo and uninstalled the program completely. I rebooted and the problem is gone. Unfortunately so is my use of that program but at least my wife can use it. Thanks for your help.

You might try installing the program again - could have been a problem with the original installation and it might work fine this time.

Unless the photo program that came with the camera is a high powered one you feel you should use, you might want to take a look at Picasa3 that Google offers. It's a free program and I use it rather than the programs that came with my digital cameras. It's great for organizing and has an outstanding number of features. You can do some editing with it but for sophisticated editing you do need something with a bit more horsepower. I view Picasa3 more of a utility and organizational tool than a photo editor.

Should you decide to try Google, I would suggest you open a Google e-mail account if you don't already have one. Some of the features that are available do require a Google account.

Hello, Virginia. Thank you for your suggestions.

I actually re-installed the program twice but both times the same error occurred.

I actually use Google's Picasa for some of my online albums. I find its ability to make slideshows a bit cumbersome, particularly if you want to add music. The Kodak movie camera we purchased has a very cool movie-maker that allows you to easily make slideshows and movies and then upload them to Facebook and YouTube. So, it's unfortunate that I am unable to make use of this particular program. However, I take heart in the fact that my wife can use it (for some reason).

    Anyway... thank you.

Without knowing the name of the software it is difficult to Google for threads from people experiencing the same problem - have you done this?

One thought that occurs - if this message is shown when you log on it suggests that the camera is connected - is it? I suspect not.

Pete: No, the camera was not connected to the computer. In fact, I waited for the safe/eject icon to pop up before removing it. The software was from ArcSoft and the particular program was Media Impressions Software for Kodak.

Pete: I didn't realize there was a forum over there. Thanks for the leads. I'll follow these up. I think we can mark this thread as resolved.

Follow-up: I'm a stubborn old character. Anyway, I took Pete's advice and tried re-installing the device from a USB port at the back of the computer. It appears to have done the trick. Thanks.

    Excellent news :)

There is a difference between the front and rear USB ports - those at the back are hard wired to the motherboard, those at the front are soft wired. Although you would think that they should behave the same often they do not.
