I have for some time noticed a certain instability in my system, the other day i tried to burn a CD which i had not done for about a year. After the burning sequence but before validation etc. i recieved a screen msg. telling me there was a problem with the ATAPI connection. I then looked in Sysytem events and took a couple of screen dumps of two problems.
I have posted the images on Photobucket.

    Would appreciate your opinion. Thanks.

Is there any yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager ?

The 2nd image shows that something is writing to Parallel Port which is not available on your computer. Made any changes or installed any program before this error cropped up ?

It says to check the connection, so I suggest you take the drive's cable connectors out and reseat them. Also do the same for the cable at the motherboard. Connectors can get bad connections, pulling them out and putting them back in can reform the connection again.

Nothing abnormal in Device Manager, i am inclined to think (hope) that the problem lies in the cable. Considering the age of the unit it would not be suprising. Will see if i have the time to pull it apart later. I will keep you posted. Thanks.

One of the errors is about Parallel Port.

Other error [the last image] points to some problem with SUPERAntiSpyware. There is no other info about ATAPI.

If both HD and DVD on same cable then check the following.

HD connected at end of cable and jumped as Master.
    DVD jumped as Slave.
Some older drives don’t like CS (cable select setting).

Open Device Manager "“ IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers "“ primary IDE channel "“ Advanced Settings (tab).
Device 0 and 1 should be: Device Type: Auto Detection. Transfer Mode: DMA if available . Current Transfer Mode should be: Ultra DMA Mode x (number for x will vary).

If Transfer mode is PIO only could be several reasons.

    Device 1 is showing,
    Auto detection
    DMA if available.

    Current Transfer Mode. Not Applicable.

I will check the link you attached.

    Thanks.

I´m afraid that i got lost reading the link, but it seems to me that it is intended for people who actually do partition etc. their drives, if i have understood any of it.
Is it possible to reinstall the ATA/SATA from the CD without dissabling the pc?

    Julian.
