I have two Vista machines and two Win 7 machines.

The two Vista machines see each other's files. Tha was accomplished by using just the sharing dialogue boxes.

The two Win 7 machines see each other's files. That needed two steps: the standard networking diaogue box for sharing; putting one password on both machines "homegroup "

The Vista machines cannot access the Win 7 machines' files.

One Win 7 machine can see the files on both Vista machines.
One Win 7 machine can see the files on one Vista machine only.

Now, all the permissions are in place, all of the sharing options in Network and Sharing Center| Advanced sharing settings have been made identical.

Apparently, Homegroups are new with Win7 so one cannot even have one in Vista.

I have seen two threads across the internet: 1.) you will never get this done, it cannot happen; and 2.) easy as pie just do XXX [where XXX=the steps I have already taken] blah. blah, blah.

    Anyone got any helpful hints?

This was a big help, Arie's article. Now, both Win 7 machines can see each other and both of the Vista machines.

I went to both Vista machines and followed the same steps, but to no avail.

If I have to, I can live with this. One of the Win 7 machines which can see everything is right where I work.

Also, properly connected or not, the ethernet connection is not the best way to transfer or copy large files like music or video. it is much faster to use an external USB 2.0 or 3.0 drive. I have a WD 2.0 Passport 320gig, and a 16gig "memory stick ".

If there is any further advice on getting the Vista machines to access files on the Win 7 machines, I will be very appreciative.

Networking is not my forte, so I don't think I have anything else to offer, but hopefully other Members will chip in.

I gave up trying to network my standby XP box - essentially only used for reference with regard to XP questions on WindowsBBS, with my 3 windows 7 boxes. Although I was successful I was forever having to reboot the router to maintain an internet connection. With just the 7 boxes in a Homegroup everything is fine.

    Enough was enough :)

Whoops!! guess what? Now one of the Vista machines can access everything. Hooray. I am not sure what i did right. It is actually my nerve center.

So, three machines out of four are all set. The last machine is a conundrum. I checked through Arie's procedure again, brought up the same screen in each, they are identical.

I am inclined to quit at this point, the last machine being my work laptop, which I do not want to ***** with too much. I mean, I own it, but no one like the fact that when I go home at night I basically take the whole corporation with me. if somehow I ******* it up, they would put me on a company owned machine, not as good for job security.

Maybe best to quit while you are ahead :)

Arie's away at the moment - he may see the thread on his return.

I'd do some troubleshooting on the 'problem' pc. First check the event viewer and see if there are any errors that may be related to networking (check System under Windows Logs.

Another thing to try is to run this command from a command prompt: net use \\trouble machine IP address /u:trouble machine account user name

    What prompts/errors do you get?

Also, make sure that you've rebooted the PC's after making changes. Rebooted your router?

    What about firewalls?

    Arie-

Thanks, your script to which i was referred was really terrific. I am in good shape now, the one Vista machine which cannot see the two Win 7 machines is my work laptop, I really do not want to mess with it any more. i can get it from any of the other three.
